Opposition Chief Whip Zainul Abedin Farroque on Saturday alleged that the government is conspiring to continue the parliament session even after October 24 to resist BNP’s movement and mislead people.

“It was decided before the start of the current session that it will continue till October 24. But some treasury bench lawmakers took floor on point of order just two days before its prorogation calling for continuation of the session till December 30,” he said.

The opposition chief whip came up with the allegation at a press conference at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban Media Centre.

On Wednesday, senior ruling Awami League lawmakers Tofail Ahmed, Suranjit Sengupta and Matia Chowdhury called for extension of the ongoing parliamentary session till December 30 in the wake of the opposition BNP’s threat to launch an anti-government movement after October 24.

“The 9th parliament has to be dissolved (before the national election) whether the session continues or not after October 24. The non-party caretaker government system to oversee the polls has to be incorporated in the Constitution,” Farroque said.

Asked whether BNP MPs will resign if the parliament session continues after October 24, he said his party will decide it later.

The opposition chief whip expressed the hope that the Awami League government will pass the non-party government bill in parliament after its session resumes on October 23. “We still hope that Awami League will pass the non-party government bill as they passed the one-party rule bill within just five minutes in the past.”

BNP MPs Mahbub Uddin Khokan, Abul Khayer Bhuiyan, Rehana Akhter and Syeda Ashifa Ashrafi Papia were present in the press conference.
