BNP recognises AL-BNP dialogue

Talks to continue, it says

 

After months of uncertainty and widespread violence, the country’s people on Tuesday saw the warring two major political camps –Awami League and BNP — sitting in talks in presence of a UN team that may lead to resolution to the long-drawn crisis over the 10th national election.

 

Representatives of Awami League and BNP held the closed-door meeting with UN Assistant Secretary General Oscar Fernández-Taranco at the Gulshan residence of UN Resident Coordinator Neal Walker, according to a statement signed by BNP assistant office secretary Shamimur Rahman Shamim.

 

The meeting started at 2pm and continued till 4:30pm.

 

Land Minister Amir Hossain, Industries Minister Tofail Ahmed, AL secretary general Syed Ashraful Islam and Prime Minister’s Foreign Affairs Adviser Dr Gowher Rizvi represented the government while BNP was represented by BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam, BNP standing committee members Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan and vice chairman Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury.

 

Taranco accompanied by the UN officials in the meeting.

 

In the statement, BNP said the BNP delegation led-by its acting secretary general, held a meeting with the ruling party delegation at the invitation of the UN Secretary General’s special envoy.

 

In the meeting, the statement said, both parties agreed to continue the dialogue over the election time government for holding a free, fair and credible election with the participation of all parties.

 

The main opposition party thanked UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon for taking initiatives for resolving the ongoing crisis over the general election in Bangladesh, it added.
