BNP pushes for Salahuddin’s safe return

Reiterating its demand for the safe return of its joint secretary general Salahuddin Ahmed to his family, BNP on Monday urged the country’s democracy-loving people to be vocal about it.

In a statement, BNP joint secretary general Barkatullah Bulu said, “The country’s people are stunned and angry over the unguarded remarks and cruel mockery by the important persons of the government after picking up a former elected public representative, minister, and an important politician at the dead of night.”

He further said, “We once again demand the government ensure the unharmed and safe return of Salahuddin Ahmed to his family immediately. At the same time, we also call upon all individuals, parties and organisations having democratic and human values to raise their voice in favour of the demand.

Earlier in the day, the High Court further adjourned the hearing till April 8 on its rule asking the government to explain why directions should not be given to find out BNP joint secretary general Salahuddin Ahmed and bring him before it.

According to the law-enforcement agencies’ reports, none of them arrested BNP joint secretary general Salahuddin Ahmed and they do not know his whereabouts. They have been trying to find him out and the search drive is still on, the reports added.

Hasina Ahmed, wife of Salahuddin, on March 12 moved the High Court to seek remedy claiming that the law enforcers in plainclothes picked her husband up from an Uttara house in the capital on March 10 night and yet to hand him over to any police station.

BNP leader Salahuddin had been issuing statements from hideout, including those with hartal announcements, on behalf of the BNP-led 20-party alliance, since the arrest of another BNP joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.

In the statement, Bulu accused the government of having failed to ensure security of the people’s life and property. “It has failed to produce Salahuddin before the court despite its order.”

The BNP leader alleged that though the concern of Salahuddin’s family and the country’s people are growing as he is yet to be traced out, it has no apparent impact on the ‘illegal’ government’s attitude and statements over the issue.
