The new national executive committee of Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Monday, while paying tribute to the memory of the late president Ziaur Rahman, vowed to restore democracy to the country.
Members and office bearers of new central committee, led by BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia, with large number of leaders and activists of the party and its front and associate organisations, placed wreathes and offered Fateha at the graveside of the party founder at Sher-e-Banglanagar around 5:25pm.
Members of national standing committee, the party’s highest policymaking body, and members of BNP chairperson’s advisory council also took part in the programme.
Leaders and activists of the party, its front and associate organisations from different parts of the Dhaka city started to throng the tomb of Zia in procession since around 3:00pm.
Talking to reporters at the graveside of Zia, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said the new committee vowed to restore democracy.
He said the last national council session of the party, held on March 19, empowered Khaleda Zia to form the full fledged central committee of the party and she elected the new committee.
Fakhrul claimed that the new committee inspired leaders and activists of the party across the country.
Asked about the prime minister’s remarks blaming BNP for the August 21 grenade attack, he said Awami League once had struggled for democracy and people’s right but now it was heading towards dictatorship and one-party rule.
