Khaleda Zia has asked the leaders of pro-BNP professionals to join the campaigns of her party’s candidates in the upcoming municipal polls.
Masud Ahmed Talukder, the president of Dhaka Ainjibi Samiti, a platform of lawyers, told bdnews24.com the BNP chairperson’s call came during a meeting with the professionals’ leaders on Saturday night.
“She asked professionals to join the campaigns and seek votes for (BNP) candidates,” he said.
“She wants us to work from our own positions to prevent vote rigging and make sure that people get to the polling stations to vote.”
The first-ever municipal election along political party lines will be held at 234 municipalities on Dec 30.
The BNP has fielded its candidates in 231 municipalities. It has also extended support to the candidates of the LDP and late Kazi Zafar Ahmed’s Jatiya Party faction in two other municipalities.
Earlier in the day, the BNP announced that it will lead the 20-party alliance in the elections.
The party’s Acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir told the media that the alliance partners will support each other’s candidates in the municipal polls.
Saturday night’s meeting was held at Khaleda Zia’s Gulshan office.
It was attended by the top leaders of Sammilito Peshajibi Parishad (United Professionals’ Council), university teachers, journalists, lawyers, engineers, doctors, agriculturists, Jatiyatabadi Sangskritik Jote and other pro-BNP organisations.
Mirza Fakhrul was among the senior BNP leaders seen at the meeting.
