A Dhaka court has granted police eight days to interrogate KM Ziauddin Fahad, the chief administrator of pro-Jamaate-e-Islami Facebook page Basher Kella.
The page has been in news for quite some time for spreading radical
religious messages and inciting attacks on pro-independence elements.
DMP Detective Branch’s (DB) Sub-Inspector Mizanur Rahman said they had pleaded for a 10-day remand in the court on Friday afternoon.
But the court ordered for eight days of questioning.
Fahad was arrested on Thursday afternoon at his sister’s house in
Comilla Cadet College residential area.
Basher Kella is notorious for posting messages supporting war criminals and the pro-Jamaat lobby.
It also maligns and threatens pro-liberation and other progressive lobbies for their viewpoints.
DB’s Joint Commissioner Monirul Islam told reporters that Fahad had
admitted to being the “chief coordinator” of Islami Chhatra Shibir’s publicity wing.
“He has over 50 fake Facebook and email IDs,” Islam said.
He used to run online propaganda under the name of ‘Biplob Dahan’ and
‘Truth Fighter’, Islam added.
He said Fahad was working as the admin of over 50 Facebook pages that shared caricatures of the judiciary, police and writers, and issued death threats.
Police had also confiscated a laptop and two mobile phones from Fahad,
the son of a Union Parishad chairman at Chittagong’s Banshkhali.
Police on Feb 26 detained extremist blogger Farabi Shafiur Rahman over his suspected ties to the brutal murder of writer-blogger Avijit Roy.
He is accused of threatening and inciting attack on Avijit and several
other bloggers and pro-independence activists.
