After a month of restraint and reflection, Muslims in Bangladesh began celebrating the Eid-ul-Fitr early on Saturday.
President Md Abdul Hamid and Prime minister Sheikh Hasina have greeted the people and called for amity on the occasion.
According to police, around six million people left Dhaka to celebrate the Eid with their loved ones back in their villages and towns.
The news of the Shawwal moon having been sight brought joy to all despite sufferings on gruelling journey.
Eidgahs and mosques are ready for Eid congregations.
The main congregation will be held at Dhaka’s National Eidgah at 8:30am.
President Md Abdul Hamid, top judges, Cabinet ministers, MPs, politicians and people from others echelons of society will join the Eid prayers and exchange greetings.
Five Eid congregations will be held at Baitul Mukarram National Mosque.
The largest Eid congregation will be held at Kishoreganj’s Sholakia like the previous years.
Two special trains will ferry people to and back from the congregation.
The Met office has forecast light to moderate rain in many parts of the country on the day.
President Hamid will exchange Eid greetings at the Bangabhaban from 10am and Prime minister Hasina at the Ganabhaban from 9:30am.
In a message, the president said, “Eid-ul-Fitr brings the message of happiness for the mankind after the month-long practice of self-restraint.”
The prime minister called upon all to reflect upon the teachings of Eid in personal, social and national lives.
The Eid was celebrated in the Middle-East and in Europe on Friday. Many villages of Bangladesh also celebrated the Eid on Friday following Saudi Arabia.
Special menus will be served at government hospitals, jails and children’s homes.
Bangladesh Betar, Bangladesh Television and the private TV and radio stations are broadcasting special programmes on the occasion.
