The Border Guard Bangladesh and Myanmar Border Guard Police exchanged fires over smuggling of contrabands goods near Laldia in the bordering river Naff at Domdomia this morning.
The gunfight took place around 5.30am.
One of the BGB members sustained bullet injury and another one was allegedly kidnapped by Myanmar Border Guard Police, BGB officials said.
This gunfight took place just after 48 hours of holding regional commander level bilateral flag meeting between the two border forces, BGB and BGP.
Bullet injured BGB member is identified as Sipahi Biplob Kumar. He has been admitted to Cox’s Bazar sadar hospital. The abducted BGB member is Nayeak Abdur Razzak. They both are under 42 BGB battalion of Teknaf.
Colonel M M Anisur Rahman, sector commander, BGB at Cox’s Bazar, told New Age that BGB members of 42 battalion of Teknaf were patrolling along the bank of the river Naff at Laldia point near Domdomia about 5.30am. At the same time the BGB members were trying to nab some Yaba (methamphetamine) smugglers there.
The Yaba peddlers fled. But Myanmar BGP opened fires at the BGB men. The BGB members then retaliated
One BGB member received bullet injury while another one fell in the river Naff. Later, bullet injured BGB member was rescued by BGB team but Nayeak Abdur Razzak was abducted by BGP, BGB men alleged.
‘We are trying to hold a flag meeting with BGP to get our man back and cool down border tension,’ Colonel Anis said.
‘Additional forces of BGB have been deployed on the border point and expediting patrols,’ he pointed out.
Tension is mounting on the border areas along Bangladesh-Myanmar after the gun fight, the BGB official said.
