Bangladesh gets 2 bronze medals in APMO

Bangladesh has secured two bronze medals and three honorable mentions in the 26th Asian Pacific Mathematics Olympiad (APMO) 2014.

The results were formally announced on Wednesday. A total of 36 countries participated in the competition.

The bronze medals winners are Nur Muhammad Shafiullah of Dhaka College and Adib Hasan of Mymensingh Zila School.

The three other who secured honorable mentions are Asif-E-Elahi of Sylher Government Pilot High School, Sazid Akhter Turzo of Sirajganj BL Government High School and Soumitra Das of Saint Joseph Higher Secondary School (Dhaka).

Overwhelmed at the outstanding performance of the Bangladeshi team, Bangladesh Math Olympiad Coach Mahbub Majumder said: “I’m happy at the results. I hope that we’ll be able to select 10 candidates for the competition next year and the results will also be better.”

Sponsored by the Dutch-Bangla Bank Limited (DBBL) and under the arrangement of Prothom Alo, the Bangladesh Math Olympiad organised the APMO in Bangladesh on 6 March.

As many as 71 students took part in the competition from Bangladesh this year and seven of them were finally selected for the global competition on the basis of merit list.

The APMO contest consists of one four-hour long paper consisting five questions (each having maximum 7 points) of varying difficulty.

Contestants should not have formally enrolled at a university or equivalent post-secondary institution and they must be under 20 years on the 1st July of the year the contest.

Starting from 1989, the Asian Pacific Mathematics Olympiad is a regional mathematics competition, which involves countries from the Asia-Pacific region.
