A newly-appointed diplomat to Bangladesh Consulate in Jeddah has been asked not to attend office following an altercation with a colleague at the same mission but has not been called back to Dhaka, said an official on Sunday.

“So far I know the official hasn’t been called back but asked to refrain from performing official duties,” Consul General of Bangladesh in Jeddah M Nazmul Islam told UNB over phone.
The clarification came when Arab News carried out a report saying a Bangladesh diplomat has been called back to Dhaka.

Sources at the consulate said the incident took place on July 1 and it involved Mohammed Jamal Uddin, deputy director of National Security Intelligence (NSI), and Bangladesh Foreign Ministry Assistant Secretary Tanvir Kabir.

The incident reportedly occurred when one official wanted to know the identification of another since both did not know each other when a large number of expatriates had gathered to process their documents under amnesty regulations, sources said.

There was allegation that Jamal Uddin beat up Tanvir Kabir and Tanvir later lodged a complaint against Jamal Uddin. The witnesses also gave statement against Jamal Uddin.

Foreign Ministry sources said the Ministry officials met Foreign Secretary M Shahidul Haque on Thursday and upheld their expectations to him regarding the matter.

Tanvir and his accompanying team are back in Dhaka completing their tasks.
