The Bangladesh Bank has postponed its board of directors’ emergency meeting scheduled for Tuesday against the backdrop of a funds theft from its account in the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.

Bangladesh Bank Executive Director Subhankar Saha told bdnews24.com on Monday evening, “The meeting has been postponed for special reasons. It has not been re-scheduled yet.”

The announcement came soon after finance minister AMA Muhith called a media conference at 11am on Tuesday to brief journalists on the cyber heist and its investigation.

The finance minister’s private secretary told reporters on Monday evening that Muhith would speak at length on the issue at the media meet.

The finance minister said on Monday heads would roll in the central bank’s top management for its failure to inform him at once about the incident.

Bangladesh Bank Governor Atiur Rahman returned home on Monday afternoon after attending an IMF meeting in India amid criticism for the funds heist.

Reporters rushed to the airport to get his comments but he declined to speak.

Reporters were told by Governor Secretariat General Manager AFM Asaduzzaman that Atiur “won’t speak to anybody today”.

Bangladesh Bank on Sunday convened the board meeting for Tuesday after the Bank and Financial Institutions Division Secretary S Aslam Alam held a meeting with four deputy governors.

The secretary is an ex-office member of the board.
