Bangabandhu’s mural installation at Nat’l Press Club deferred

President of a faction of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury on Tuesday announced that they have deferred the installation of Bangabandhu’s mural at the National Press Club till April 16.
“As the Press Club management committee has sent a letter assuring us of taking a decision over the matter after discussing it with all its members, we’ve postponed our programme,” he said.
“We’ve given them a deadline to install the mural by the committee by April 16, or else, it’ll be installed through a journalists’ meeting at 11 am on April 17,” he said while addressing a rally at the National Press Club Tuesday.
The Iqbal-led BFUJ and Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) organised the rally protesting attacks on journalists, burning the national flag, damaging several Shaheed Minars at different parts of the country and attacks on minorities.
Earlier, on February 26, the Iqbal-led faction BFUJ and DUJ declared that a mural of Bangabandhu will be installed at the club marking the Independence Day on March 26 recalling the contributions of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman towards building the Jatiya Press Club.
BFUJ secretary general Abdul Jalil Bhuiyan, DUJ president Omar Faruk and general secretary Shaban Mahmud, among others, spoke on the occasion.
Meanwhile, another faction of BFUJ, led by Ruhul Amin Gazi, held a meeting instantly after the rally of the Iqbal Sobhan-led faction.
Ruhul Amin Gazi announced that a journalists’ grand rally and sit-in programme will be held on April 8 with a view to maintaining the unity and tradition of the Jatiya Press Club. “If anyone wants to break its unity, it’ll be resisted at any cost,” he said.
BFUJ secretary general Shawkat Mahmud said the decision over mural installation could taken after taking opinions of its members but if any attempt is made to install the mural ignoring their opinion it would be resisted.
President of another faction of DUJ Abdus Shaheed, general secretary Baker Hossain and Press Club general secretary Syed Abdal Ahmed also spoke on the occasion.
