AL won’t field candidate in N’ganj 5 by-poll

PM-today

The ruling Awami League will not nominate anyone for the Narayanganj 5 by-election as it will extend support to the opposition Jatiya Party’s candidate.

“We have decided to leave the seat for the Jatiya Party,” Suranjit Sengupta told the Dhaka Tribune after a meeting of the Awami League parliamentary party with party chief Sheikh Hasina in the chair on Thursday.

Apart from Suranjit, members of the body Amir Hossain Amu, Alauddin Ahmed and Syed Ashraful Islam were present at the meeting held at Hasina’s official residence Ganabhaban.

The by-election to Narayanganj 5 constituency will be held on June 26. The seat fell vacant following the death of JaPa lawmaker Nasim Osman on April 29.

The last date for filing nominations for the by-election is May 29.

The Awami League did not field any candidate in the constituency in the January 5 national election to share the seat with JaPa.

Nasim Osman’s wife Parvin Osman is rumoured to get JaPa’s nomination in the by-poll.
