AL to be responsible for any ‘75-like situation: BNP

BNP senior leader Rafiqul Islam Miah on Sunday warned that Awami League will be held responsible if a 1975-like situation reappears in the country for not holding an inclusive national election.

 

“The 1975 incident won’t recur in the country. But, Awami League has to shoulder responsibility if a 1975-like situation is created again in the country for not arranging election with the participation of all parties,” he said.

 

The BNP leader issued the warning while inaugurating a voluntary blood donation programme at the Jatiya Press Club arranged by Swadhinata Forum, marking the 33rd death anniversary of BNP founder and former President Ziaur Rahman.

 

Rafiqul, also a BNP standing committee member, alleged that the incident of killing, abduction and enforced disappearance marked a sharp rise as a pro-people government was not established in the country though a fair election. “The Prime Minister is solely responsible for it.”

 

He called upon the government for arranging a fresh national election under a non-party neutral administration to restore democracy and stability in the country and stop extrajudicial killings, enforced disappearances and abductions.

 

Mentioning that Ziaur Rahman had resorted democracy in the country putting an end to a one-party rule by introducing multiparty democracy, the BNP policymaking body member said the current regime is again trying to re-establish one-party rule.

Rafiqul alleged that the government has put the country on the brink of destruction by its misrule, repressive acts, and failure to maintain law and order and good governance.
