Ruling Awami League leaders are desperately rigging Upazila Parishad elections using the administration, a senior BNP leader has claimed.
“This has been revealed through the published news on (party loyalists) brandishing arms while storming polling booths,” said Khandker Mosharraf Hossain at a discussion on Tuesday.
“The government is also blatantly meddling with this election by using the administration,” alleged the BNP Standing Committee member at the discussion at Dhaka’s National Press Club.
“Re-polls were held at 12 centres on Monday, but it was seen that ballot boxes had been stuffed with sealed ballots the previous night,” he said.

The BNP leader, however, said violence had worsened during the second phase of the Upazila Parishad elections compared with the first phase.
The violence would not abate in the next phases of the polls if the government did not stop meddling with and ruling party men rigging the polls, he said.
The storming of polling centres and violence there proved that no election could be held under the Awami League-led government and the Election Commission, said Hossain whose party has backed candidates and who are leading in results so far.
Jatiyatabadi Juba Dal President Syed Moazzem Hossain presided over the discussion, which was held marking the eighth anniversary of detention in jail of BNP’s Senior Vice Chairman Tarique Rahman.
