At least 15 people, including a union parishad (UP) chairman, was injured in a clash between supporters of the ruling Awami League and BNP at Sanyasi Bazar in Rampal upazila on Sunday evening.
Quoting locals, Nizamul Haque Molla, superintendent of police of the district, said a group of BNP activists, led by local BNP leader Abdul Alim, attacked AL leader and chairman of Mallikber union Nazmul Kabir Jhilam and his men in the area around 7:30pm, triggering a clash which left 15 people injured.
Among the injured, Nazmul Kabir Jhilam, woman UP member Lackia Khanam, Masum and Moniruzzaman Habib were admitted to Bagerhat Sadar Hospital.
Angered by the incident, local AL men attacked several houses of the BNP men in the area and torched 10 shops.
On information, firefighters from local the fire station rushed to the spot and doused the flames.
Meanwhile, additional police members were deployed in the area to avoid further trouble.
