ACC to probe politicians’ ‘unusual wealth surge’

The Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) will soon launch separate probes into the allegations of unusual wealth accumulations by politicians, including former ministers and MPs, said the ACC secretary on Monday.

“The Commission will conduct probes into the allegations against politicians to ascertain how they acquired huge wealth in five years. It’s now scrutinising the media reports published on accumulation of unusual wealth by politicians,” ACC secretary Faizur Rahman Chowdhury told the monthly media briefing of the Commission at the ACC head office.

He said the Commission will also conduct probes to know how the dependants of politicians like sons, daughters and wives acquire unusual wealth.

About the money-laundering case filed by the ACC against BNP senior vice chairman Tarique Rahman, now in London, the ACC secretary said the High Court recently asked Tarique to surrender before the designated lower court.

“If he (Tarique) doesn’t surrender, the ACC as well as other agencies concerned will take steps as per the directives of the court,” he said.
