Awami League General Secretary Syed Ashraful Islam has said there is a ‘showoff’ minister in their midst but did not say who.
“If the central concern is to clap and jump around for the media, then we too can go and visit bridges and culverts every day.”
The dig is apparently pointed to Communication Minister Obaidul Quader even though the LGRD Minister, speaking at a meeting at his ministry, did not name him.
He laughed at his own comment and while the others laughed too, someone from the crowd said, “A crack at the communication minister.”

Obaidul Quader, who was also in charge of the ministry in Awami League’s previous term, is a regular sight at bridges, culverts, train and bus stations where he interacts with the media about works in progress.
Quader who got office at the end of previous term was visible in taking proactive steps against irregularities.
The minister was seen stopping and rebuking BRTC bus drivers on the road. He also slapped a rail worker while he was in charge of the railway ministry.
Ashraf said, “A minister can’t be busy with project inaugurations, oil theft, power theft by Chevron or soil theft…”
“It is not the minister’s job to see if someone is stealing oil from a pump. That is not what he is responsible for. There are specific officials to keep those in check.”
The minister’s work was to ensure and a favourable environment so that all officials and staff can properly fulfil their work, clarified the senior Awami League leader.
The ministers who failed in the government’s last term have been left out of the cabinet, Ashraf told reporters after taking oath of office on Sunday.
“Those who were appointed this time will be let off if they fail in their job (as well),” he said.
New state minister for communication Mashiur Rahman Ranga was also with him at the programme on Monday.
He said, “I’m a small person who has been given a big responsibility by the Prime Minister. I am grateful to her.”
“I’m not here to create party divides. I will give it my best without succumbing to corruption.”
The Jatiya Party leader addressed Ashraf saying, “It doesn’t matter that we are from different parties. I am here to learn, so you (Ashraf) must teach.”
Ranga, who replaces Awami League’s Jahangir Kabir Nanak, also requested the assistance of the ministry’s employees.
