Barring “mental complications”, police have failed to hit up on any other clue to the murder of two children “by their mother”.
“Preliminary investigations have revealed that the woman killed her children because of her mental complications. No other reason has emerged,” said Additional Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s (DMP) Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime Department Monirul Islam at a press briefingon Sunday.
RAB and police had earlier said that Mahfuza Malek, wife of a garment businessman, had confessed to the crime.
On Sunday, she gave her statement to the Dhaka Magistrate’s Court when produced there.
“She was taken to court on Sunday because she wanted to give her statement. It will serve as a piece of evidence but not the sole one,” Monirul said.
The police would continue probing, he said. “Several psychologists and psychiatrists have been consulted regarding her. The case is rare, but not impossible.”
He cited the case of a woman in the US who drowned her five children and went on to inform police and her husband. Then she confessed to having committed the crime.
“The woman had said she feared Satan would kill them (her children) in future.”
Monirul said there were other instances in Bangladesh of mothers killing their children, though the nature of the crimes was different.
On Feb 29, the two children – Nusrat Aman Arani, 14, and her brother Alvi Aman, 6 – were declared dead after they were taken to the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH).
They used to live in Bonoshree’s B-Block with father Amanullah and mother Mahfuza.
Initially, the family had tried to give the impression that the children had died due to food poisoning caused by food brought from a neighbourhood Chinese restaurant.
RAB also said attempts had been made to take away the bodies from the DMCH before the post-mortem examination.
The case took a different turn after the autopsy revealed injury marks on the bodies.
RAB brought the parents to Dhaka from Jamalpur for interrogation after the burial of the children.
The elite force later said Mahfuza had confessed to having strangled her children to death because she was perturbed about their education.
The father of the children later lodged a complaint against his wife with police.
The Rampura police and the metropolitan detective police said Mahfuza had “stuck” to her version while in remand.
