In the wake of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s scathing attack on their party chairperson Khaleda Zia over ‘appeasing foreigners’, BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Saturday said BNP has no habit of lodging any complaint with foreigners.
“There’s no question of lodging any complaint with foreigners. BNP is not habituated to lodging complaint with foreigners…it’s rather Awami League which has the history of lodging complaints,” he said.
Fakhrul said this while talking to reporters at BNP’s Nayapaltan central office in the city.
The BNP spokesperson said Khaleda Zia had only briefed the Indian foreign minister about the absence of democracy in Bangladesh, especially after the January 5 polls.
A BNP delegation, led by its chairperson Khaleda Zia, met with Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Friday and said democracy is now absent in Bangladesh.
Later in the day at a party programme, Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina made a scathing attack on Khaleda Zia saying “stop killing people and weeping to foreigners.”
Fakhrul said, “Awami League has been saying this out of frustration as it has got alienated from people.”
He said Khaleda’s meeting with the Indian External Affairs meeting was held following the Indian minister’s invitation. “It was a courtesy call on where bilateral issues were discussed.”
Asked about BNP standing committee member Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan’s statement that there was no democracy in the country, Fakhrul said, “Some political issues were discussed at the meeting, and that statement was the statement of fact, no complaint has been lodged.”
“Over BNP’s statement, Sushma said it was internal political affairs of Bangladesh and the people of Bangladesh should resolve the crisis,” Fakhrul said.
Responding to a query, Fakhrul said they hoped that India wants democratic practice in its neighboring country for the sake of regional cooperation.
In response to another query, the BNP leader said the Narayanganj by-polls again proved that it is not possible to hold fair election under an Awami League government.
