A daylong comprehensive security dialogue on ‘Managing the Impact of Climate Change in South Asia’ was held at Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban of Dhaka University (DU) on Saturday.
The Bureau of Economic Research of DU and the Hanns Seidel Foundation of Germany jointly organised the programme which DU Vice-chancellor Prof Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique inaugurated as the chief guest.
In his address, the DU vice-chancellor said the South Asian counties, especially Bangladesh, are the worst sufferers due to the negative impact of climate change.
“Food insecurity, flood, river erosion, drought and lack of pure water among other calamities are hitting the South Asian countries due to the adverse of climate change,” he said.
Dr Arefin said climate change is not only an environmental issue, but the country’s socio-economic development is also connected to it.
Underscoring the need for co-operation among the South Asian countries, he said combined research on South Asian countries can play a significance role in minimising climate change impact.
Additional Secretary to the Environment and Forests Ministry M Abdul Hannan, German Embassy official Dr Ferdinand Von Wehye and director of the Bureau of Economic Research (BER) Dr Shafiquzzaman, were among others, present with BER chairman in the chair.
