Bangladesh is a leading country for fisheries produce and can play a significant role in the growing food demand for the world in the future, a UN report says.
The latest report of the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations said Bangladesh is the fourth leading country in the world for inland fisheries production.
The report highlighted the growing role of fish and aquaculture in feeding the world.
The country is also the fifth leading in the world for farmed fish produce while its “potential for mariculture production of fin fish remains largely untapped.”
“Asian countries are expected to account for 91% of world aquaculture production in 2022, with Bangladesh, Thaland, India and China experiencing highest growth rates,” the report said.
Aquaculture, also known as aqua-farming, involves cultivating freshwater and saltwater organisms under controlled conditions.
Global aquaculture production marked a record high of more than 90m tonnes in 2012 with China alone accounting for over 60% of the total share.
However, the report warned that to continue to grow sustainability, aquaculture needs to become less dependent on wild fish for feeds and introduce greater diversity in farmed culture and practices.
The planet’s oceans, if sustainability managed, have an important role to play in providing jobs and feeding the world, according to the FAO report.
The report also said that the fisheries sector have a big potential in providing a source of income.
Fisheries and aquaculture accounted for about 60 million people throughout the world with 84% of the number in Asia, the report estimated.
