Two activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir, student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami, were killed in firing by joint forces during a clash at Narikuli in Debhata upazila early Sunday.
The deceased were identified as Shibir activist Abul Kalam, 28, son of Akbar Ali of Kulia village of the upazila and Maruf Hossain, 26, son of late Ashraful of the same village.
Tarak Biswas, officer-in-charge of Debhata Police Station, said joint forces comprising Rab, police and BGB members arrested Maruf Hossain, an accused in Debhata upazila Awami League leader Abu Raihan murder case, on Friday night .
According to his statement, joint forces arrested Abul Kalam, another accused in the murder case, on Saturday morning.
When the law enforcers along with Maruf and Abul Kalam launched an operation at Narikuli around 4 am on Sunday to arrest the other accused in the case local Jamaat-Shibir activists attacked the team of joint forces in a bid to snatch the two accused, triggering a fierce clash, the OC said.
The law enforcers fired gunshots at the Jamaat-Shibir men, leaving Maruf and Abul Kalam bullet-wounded.
The injured were rushed to the Debhata upazila health complex and then shifted to Sadar Hospital where doctors declared them dead.
Three policemen, including two constables- Mehedi Hasan and Abdus Salam- were also injured during the clash.
Two pipe guns, five rounds of bullets, five bombs and two sharp weapons were also recovered from the spot.
