Accusing the government of maneuvering in giving it permission for holding its programme, BNP on Sunday hoped that its Monday’s mass rally at Suhrawardy Udyan in the city will turn into a human sea with people’s spontaneous participation braving all obstacles.
“The government gave us permission only a few hours ahead of our programme so that we can’t stage a big rally. We’ve taken it as a challenge and will turn our mass rally into a human sea,” said BNP international affairs secretary Asaduzzaman Ripon.
He made the remarks while addressing a press briefing at BNP’s Nayapaltan central office.
It was the first press briefing at their party central office after 51 days as the government besieged it since the arrest of BNP joint secretary general and office secretary Ruhul Kabir Ahmed Rizvi from it in the early hours of November 30.
Ripon said they will hold the rally peacefully which will begin around 2pm. BNP chief Khaleda Zia will address the rally.
He, on behalf of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia, urged the Dhaka city dwellers to join their rally to say ‘no’ to the current regime like they did during the January 5 elections.
As part of its countrywide programme and the first of its kind after the national election, the party will hold the rally apparently to show its strength.
The party held its last public rally in the city on the same ground on November 25 last year.
Ripon said the government through its repressive acts is trying to annihilate the opposition. “We want to tell the government shun the repressive acts and come to the path of democracy.”
He also called upon the government to take initiatives for talks to hold a free, fair, credible and inclusive election in the light of people’s hopes and aspirations.
