Hefajat-e-Islam on Sunday announced a set of porgrammes protesting the government move to bring Qawmi education under its ‘control’.

The programmes include demonstrations across the country on November 1, a grand rally at Parbati High School ground in Hathazari upazila of the district on November 2 and grand rallies at divisional headquarters by November 15.

The Islamist group also threatened to launch harsher programmes, including hartal, if the government does not refrain from passing the bill to establish its control over Qawmi madrasahs and if it tries to resist its programmes.

The programmes were announced at a press conference at a community centre in Hathazari at noon.

Hefajat organising secretary Azizul Haque Islamabadi read out the written statement on behalf of its secretary general Junayed Babunagri.

In his statement, Banunagri warned that the government will be in jeopardy if it tries to interfere in Qawmi madrasahs. “There’ll be blood-shedding. The government will have to pass the bill over the dead bodies.”

He also claimed there is no proof of links of Qawmi madrasahs to terrorism and militancy.

About the participation in the next general election, the Hefajat secretary general said they would not join the polls under the banner of any other parties.

He, however, said if any Hefajat leaders want to participate in the polls individually that will be their personal matter.

The demand for the release of Hefajat leaders, including Mufti Waqqas and Mufti Harun bin Izhar, also came up at the press conference.
