Communications Minister Obaidul Quader on Tuesday urged the opposition not to destroy democracy in the name of movement.
“Don’t destroy democracy in the name of movement. Don’t try to turn the country into a state like Pakistan and Afghanistan. We want to do the politics of consensus, but you (BNP) have erected a wall by celebrating birthday on August 15,” he said.
The minister said this while addressing a discussion organised by Swadhinata Chikitshak Parishad marking the National Mourning Day at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University in the city.
On the issue of dialogue between Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and opposition leader Khaleda Zia, Quader said, “We don’t want to build the wall of division. Rather, we want to build the bridge of consensus. The government never says it wouldn’t sit for dialogue. But it’s you (BNP) who doesn’t want dialogue.”
Quader, also a presidium member of the ruling Awami League, alleged that BNP is spreading a false propaganda. “They’re trying to destabilise the country by throwing non-political programmes, which are contrary to democracy.
Taking part in the discussion, Awami League joint general secretary Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif said there is no need for mediators to solve country’s political crisis.
“We want to assure that the two political parties can solve the crisis by sitting together, if any crisis arises between the government and the opposition. In this context, I think there is no need for mediators… the people of the country also believe so,” he added.
Health Minister AFM Ruhal Haque, among others, addressed the discussion meetin
