Shahbagh’s Ganajagaran Mancha, that seeks maximum penalty for convicted war criminals, has said the government must be sincere in its efforts to ban the Jamaat-e-Islami.
Ganajagaran Mancha spokesperson Imran H Sarker said he thinks the war crimes verdict will be executed before the present government’s tenure comes to an end.
“It is not a huge problem to ban the Jamaat, as its registration has already been cancelled. What is important is whether the government is sincere or not,” he said on Wednesday after a procession rejecting the Jamaat’s 48-hour shutdown.
“We believe the government is sincere,” Sarker said.
The Mancha procession started from Shahbagh’s Prajanma Chattar around 11:30am.
Sarker said the procession was meant to encourage the people to foil the strike called by the Jamaat.
The Ganajagaran Mancha came into existence after a tribunal sentenced Jamaat Assistant Secretary General Abdul Quader Molla.
“The government has no option but to execute the war crimes verdict to gain the people’s confidence,” he said.
Ganajagaran Mancha took out a procession on Tuesday denouncing Jamaat’s shutdown.
A High Court verdict on Aug 1 said Jamaat’s registration with the Election Commission was ‘illegal’. The party promptly called a 48-hour shutdown protesting against the verdict.
The Mancha had been protesting each strike that Jamaat has called.
