Two Jamaat men were killed and 10 people injured, mostly with bullets, in a series of clashes with police and Awami League workers at Baro Dargarhat in Sitakunda upazila on Wednesday evening.
The deceased were identified as Abdullah Al Rasel, 30, son of Nurul Alam of Uttar Pedainagar, and Parvez, 28, of Amirabad area in the upazila.
Witnesses said the trouble broke out around 6:30 pm when activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) and Jubo League stabbed Rasel frequently and severed his tendons of hands and legs as he went to Baro Dargarhat to buy iftar items.
Rasel succumbed to his injuries on the way to Chittagong Medical College Hospital around 8pm.
As the news of Rasel’s killing spread around, Jamaat-Shibir activists took to the streets and blocked the busy the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway at Baro Dargarhat, creating huge tailbacks and thus inflicting sufferings on homebound people ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr.
They also vandalised 12-14 vehicles and torched seven others on the highway.
On information, police rushed in and tried to disperse the agitating Jamaat-Shibir men. However, the activists of the Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing pelted the law enforcers with brickbats, triggering a fresh clash.
At one stage, police opened fire on the Jamaat-Shibir men, leaving eight of them injured, five with bullets. Two cops were also injured in the clash.
Of the injured, Parvez died on the way to the CMCH around 11pm.
The condition of a sub-inspector, Golam Faruk, admitted to Feni Sadar Hospital was stated to be critical.
Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) have been deployed in the area to fend off further trouble, assistant police super Farid Uddin told UNB.
