Why is online activism not winning?

You are young, politically conscious and an online activist. You circulate on the net with anger and without fear: you explain rajakar-freedom fighter-chagu-bhada, you deposit it all on facebook (just as a child weds off his dolls, send him to school– play-acting, virtually). Today you wrote a fantastic status/note– 500 likes, 300 shares, 100 friend requests. Underneath is a flood of comments, and if anyone raises a question, you slang them off as you like. All in all, your day was quite satisfying. It was successful online activism.

But you forgot to ask yourself a very simple question. All these people who are praising your pro-Shahbagh stance, is there anyone among them who 5 years ago did not want trials for war criminals? If the answer is no, then sorry to say, your whole day is wasted. Giving my friend Rafiqullah Sana any anti-Jamaat sabak is just waste of time. His iman is already solid. Even if my and Sana bhai’s anti-Jamaat feeling rises to 100 degree, the number of votes is still two, not three.

Yes, if you have political aspirations, or you want to be like Omi Rahman Pial, then your day has gone well. But your manjile maksud, that is, ultimately to politically defeat the Islamists, that cause you have not helped at all, in fact you have hurt it. You have created a fraternity, even a cult, but you have done done activism. You have gathered people who agree with each other in one place, and are playing kabadi while chanting either chagu-chagu-chagu or bhada-bhada-bhada. Please think with a cool head.

You like Michael Moore’s documentaries, you watch them, Moore makes more money as well. But the cause he has taken on, that doesn’t advance one bit. Because he is deeply divisive and polarizing. Those who love him, their love grows deeper after seeing his documentary. Those who hate him, they want to murder him. He has repeatedly failed to bring the opposition into his camp. During the 1970s, the same critique was made of western feminists– that they antagonize those women that they need most in the movement (they no longer make that mistake).

Since you have made the Islamists “not there,” your only objective should be to win them back. That this is possible, very much possible– this thought does not come into your head, because you are angry, terribly angry. And because you are angry, there is no big picture in front of you. Because you are angry, you are certain you are correct (you have never thought in life, I might be wrong). And you are even more certain because you have simplified everything. The gaps in your knowledge are compensated by your conviction. In the meantime, the gap between you and the Islamists is only increasing every day. What you mean by “removing” Islamists is not clear even to you.

The biggest problem with Bangladesh online activism is that it is tremendously divisive, and so everyone loses the middle ground. After receiving 10,000 likes in one hour, Basher Kella thinks they have received all they could want. But until the day seculars and Hindus give them a like, they are only jumping around in a vacuum, which they fail to understand. (in Lebannon, Hamas is supported by Shia-Sunni-Christians, more or less).

Is online activism of no use at all. No, not at all. For sort term activism that polarizes– for example, right before an election– it works. But for long-term success, you have to pull the other side nearer to you. How exactly to do this is not yet clear to me; but calling others names and then disengaging is not the way, that much I know.

And yes, do not forget to take up the task of building secular orphanages. As long as the state takes care of madrasas and orphanages, while you sit in front of your computer certain of your desire to send Maolana to the afterlife; the supply chain of the Islamists will stay intact. There are ten times as many people in an orphanage as there are on your friend list– don’t forget that.
