Today you wrote a fantastic status/noteâ 500 likes, 300 shares, 100 friend requests. Underneath is a flood of comments, and if anyone raises a question, you slang them off as you like. All in all, your day was quite satisfying. It was successful online activism.
But you forgot to ask yourself a very simple question. All these people who are praising your pro-Shahbagh stance, is there anyone among them who 5 years ago did not want trials for war criminals? If the answer is no, then sorry to say, your whole day is wasted. Giving my friend Rafiqullah Sana any anti-Jamaat sabak is just waste of time. His iman is already solid. Yes, if you have political aspirations, or you want to be like Omi Rahman Pial, then your day has gone well. You like Michael Mooreâs documentaries, you watch them, Moore makes more money as well. But the cause he has taken on, that doesnât advance one bit. Because he is deeply divisive and polarizing. Those who love him, their love grows deeper after seeing his documentary. Those who hate him, they want to murder him. He has repeatedly failed to bring the opposition into his camp. During the 1970s, the same critique was made of western feministsâ that they antagonize those women that they need most in the movement (they no longer make that mistake).
Since you have made the Islamists ânot there,â your only objective should be to win them back. Is online activism of no use at all. No, not at all. For sort term activism that polarizesâ for example, right before an electionâ it works. But for long-term success, you have to pull the other side nearer to you. How exactly to do this is not yet clear to me; but calling others names and then disengaging is not the way, that much I know.
And yes, do not forget to take up the task of building secular orphanages. As long as the state takes care of madrasas and orphanages, while you sit in front of your computer certain of your desire to send Maolana to the afterlife; the supply chain of the Islamists will stay intact. There are ten times as many people in an orphanage as there are on your friend listâ donât forget that.
