Says prime minister
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday said the opposition was staging anti-government movement to foil democracy, bring back a 1/11-like situation and save war criminals.
She also said the nation could not move forward as the anti-liberation forces ruled the country for 21 years after the assassination of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in 1975.
The premier made the remarks while addressing a discussion meeting marking the historic Homecoming Day of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
On this day in 1972, Bangabandhu returned to independent Bangladesh after a nine-and-a-half-month confinement in a Pakistan jail.
Awami League (AL) organised the meeting at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in the capital.
Addressing the discussion, Hasina said cohorts of the defeated forces never want Bangladesh to become successful as an independent country. Rather they are busy to take revenge of the defeat.
“We are still witnessing their same character. We can understand if they stage movement in the public interest.
“But what is the real intention of their movement?” she told her audience.
Hasina, also the AL chief, urged the party leaders and workers to devote themselves to the development of the country.
She said her government is running the country successfully in line with the direction of Bangabandhu he laid out on January 10, 1972 at the Race Course Maidan.
She also mentioned that her government has honoured some foreign friends who had extended their support during the country’s Liberation War.
“We have amended the constitution for continuation of democracy and none can play ducks and drakes with the fate of the people.
“If anybody wants to do so they must be punished,” Hasina told the discussion.
AL presidium members Abdul Latif Siddiqui, Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim, AL advisory council member Dr Anupam Sen, among others, also spoke.
