8 to die for Ramna Batamul killing

Six have been sentenced to life term imprisonment

Huji chief Mufti Abdul Hannan and seven others have been sentenced to death in the sensational Ramna Batamul killing case.

Judge Ruhul Amin of the Dhaka’s Second Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court passed the order on Monday.

The court also sentenced six other accused to life term imprisonment for their involvement in the case.

The death awarded convicts are: Mufti Abdul Hannan Munshi, Arif Hasan Suman, Maulana Akbar Hossain alias Helaluddin, Maulana Mohammad Tajuddin (absconding), Hafez Jahangir Alam Badar (absconding), Maulana Abu Bakar alias Selim Hawlader (absconding), Mufti Shafiqur Rahman (Absconding) and Mufti Abdul Hye (absconding).

The court also fined the death row convicts Tk50,000 each.

The life sentenced convicts are: Maulana Yahiya, Maulana Shawkat Osman alias Sheikh Farid, Maulana Abdul Hannan Sabbir, Maulana Abdur Rouf, Shahadat Ullah alias Jewel and Maulana Abdur Rouf.

They were also fined Tk50,000 each. In case of failing to pay the fine, they will have to serve one more year rigorous imprisonment.

During the traditional celebrations of the Bangla New Year, 1408 (April 14, 2001) at the Ramna Batamul, several blasts killed 10 people and injured around 50 others.

Two cases — one for the killing and the other under the explosive substances act — were filed with Ramna police station in connection with the incident.
