7 Murders: Probe body visits 2 Rab offices

The probe body, formed by the government to investigate the killing of seven people, visited Rab-11 headquarters and another office of the elite force here on Saturday.

 

Sources said the probe committee members visited Rab-11 headquarters located in Adamjee area and the camp office of Special Crime Prevention Company in Puratan Court area of the city from the morning till afternoon, and talked to Rab officials there.

 

However, the team members did not talk to reporters over their visits.

 

Two former Rab officials — Lt Col Tareque Sayeed Mohammad (ex-commander of Rab-11) and Maj Arif Hossain — were arrested from Cantonment area in the capital on May 16 for their suspected involvement in the abduction and murder of seven people, including Narayanganj city panel mayor Nazrul Islam.

 

Ex-commander of Special Crime Prevention Company of Rab Lt Commander MM Rana was arrested from Puratan Court area here the following day for the same reason.

 

Meanwhile, Arif and Rana made their confessional statements before the court under section 164, while Tareque Sayeed has been put on a marathon remand.

 

On April 27, Nazrul Islam and his three associates and driver were abducted from Fatullah area in Narayanganj city. Hours into their abduction, senior lawyer of the Narayanganj District Judge’s Court, Chandan Kumar Sarker, and his driver were abducted on their way to capital Dhaka.

 

Three days into their abduction, the bodies of six people, including that of Nazrul and Chandan, were recovered from the Shitalakhya and Dhaleshwari rivers on April 30. Besides, the body of Jahangir, the car driver of Nazrul Islam, was recovered from the Shitalakhya River on May 1.

 

Following the seven murders, Shahidul Islam alias Shahid chairman, father-in-law of slain Nazrul Islam, alleged that some Rab men killed Nazrul in exchange of Tk 6 crore from city councillor Nur Hossain and other suspects.
