Some 53 BNP leaders and activists were rearrested at Kashimpur Central Jail gate on Saturday after their release on bail in various cases filed in connection with the recent violence in the city.
Jail sources said a team of Detective Branch (DB) of police detained 35 BNP men as they walked out of unit-1 of the jail between 1pm an and 2pm on bail in the cases filed against them with Paltan Police Station in connection with the March 11 violence in the city’s Nayaplatan area.
Earlier, the plainclothes police also arrested 18 other BNP leaders and activists as they came out of the unit-2 of the central jail around 12noon.
Later, all the 53 opposition men were taken to the DB police headquarters at the capital’s Minto Road.
The rearrested BNP leaders and activists include M Shahjahan, Abu Taher, Billal Hossain, Basirul, Tozammel Haq, Mehdi Hasan, Kashem, Ashraful Islam, Mujibur Rahman, Abdul Quader Zilani, Asgar Ali, Nasir Uddin, Imrul Qayes, Ziaul Haq, Zulfikar Ali, Omar Farroque, Jewel, Anwar and Asaduzzaman. They all are mid-level leaders of BNP and its associate bodies and were arrested on March 11 from BNP’s Nayaplatan central office.
Contacted, Kashipur jail super Suvash Gosh said they released the BNP men as their release orders reached them.
He said he has heard they were rearrested at the jail gate after their release.
On March 11, police in a raid on BNP’s Nayapaltan central office arrested over 150 of its leaders and workers, including some top senior leaders of the party.
The law enforcers launched the drive in the BNP office after 8-10 crude bombs went off near the BNP central office while BNP acting secretary general Fakhrul was addressing a rally.
Later, a charge-sheet was submitted against 148 of them in a case filed with Paltan Police Station under the Speedy Trial Act.
Earlier, on Thursday, the DB police rearrested BNP joint secretary general Salahuddin Ahmed at the Dhaka Central Jail gate after his release on bail in various cases.
