5 abducted in Rangamati freed

18 days into kidnap 4 Teletalk-contractor staff, college student walk to locality

Eighteen days into their abduction in Rangamati, a college student and four staff of a firm, which provides tower installation service to state-run telecom company Teletalk, were freed in Khagrachhari district Friday.

The abductors took the Bi Technology staff members to a hill in Dighinala upazila around 1:45am and asked them to walk to the plain land, Amena Begum, superintendent of police (SP) in Rangamati, told The Daily Star.

The four Bi staff — assistant engineer Akhter Hossain, technicians Hemayet Uddin and Imrul, and worker Suja Miah — and Abdul Majid, a HSC second year student of Khagrachhari Government College, were kept at the office of Rangamati SP at 4:00pm, reports our correspondent in Rangamati.

None of the abductors could be arrested as they vanished into the wild.

After they were freed in the Merung mountainous area of Dighinala, the five walked through the jungle, they met members of Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI), who took them to the SP office, said Amena.

On July 8, kidnappers abducted six including the Teletalk-contractor firm employees from Baribindughat in Baghaichhari upazila of Rangamati.

The other, Montu Chakma, a local, was released a few hours later.

On July 21, police arrested two including Montu in connection with the kidnapping.

The other is Kironmoy Chakma of Tulaban village.
