44 leaders of BNP-led alliance land in Jessore jail after surrender

A Jessore court on Sunday sent a total of 44 leaders of Bangladesh Nationalist Party-led alliance after they surrendered to the court in two cases. They are district unit BNP acting president Shamsul Huda, Jessore municipality mayor and town unit BNP president Maruful Islam, Keshabpur municipality mayor Abdus Samad Biswas, Manirampur union council chairman Nistar Faruk, district unit BNP vice-presidents Rafiqur Rahman Toton and Abdus Sabur Mandol, district unit BNP organising secretary Delwar Hossain Khokon, Jessore sadar upazila BNP president Noor-un- Nabi and general Kazi Azam, district unit BNP executive member and daily Loksamaj editor Aninda Islam Amit, district unit Juba Dal president Ehsanul Haque Munna, district unit Chhatra Dal president Rabiul Islam, Chhatra Dal leader Sheikh Asadullah Asad, and Jatiya Ganatantrik Party general secretary Nizamuddin Amit. Court sources said senior judicial magistrate Maruf Ahmed hearing the case sent leaders to jail rejecting their bail prayers. A number of BNP men including a shopkeeper were hurt as the police swooped on a human chain of the party that was held on the premises of Jessore Press Club in protest against the statements of former telecommunications minister Abdul Latif Siddique on October 1. Asgar Hossain, sub inspector, Kotwali police station filed two cases against 143 BNP men. The police picked up Syed Saberul Haque Sabu, general secretary, district unit BNP and some others from the spot. Kamal Hossain, a shopkeeper of press club area was critically wounded in police firing on the day and he is also an accused in the case.
