Forest department officials on Friday arrested a smuggler along with 40 live turtles and 200 dried turtle shells in Narayanganj.
Saleque Ahmed Mollah, a forester of wildlife division, detained Farid Ahmed, 40, and recovered the turtles of three different species — spotted flat-shell, Assamrup turtle and soft-shell turtle — at Ghat No 3 of Narayanganj.
A case was filed with the Narayanganj Sadar Model Police Station under The Wildlife (protection and safety) Act 2012.
The existing wildlife law strictly prohibits poaching, capturing, trapping and trading of wildlife and contains penalties of minimum one year jail or a fine of Tk 50,000 for breaching the provision.
