30 KU teachers resign from administrative posts

Some 30 teachers of Khulna University (KU) have resigned en masse from 33 administrative posts, including head of department and hall provost, protesting the insult of one of their fellows.

The teachers submitted their resignation letters to the office of the university’s registrar on Thursday, university sources said.

Asked why they resigned en masse, Dr Anirban Mostafa, one of the teachers, said Prof Dr Afroza Parveen, acting director of the Fine Arts Institute, was insulted at the academic council meeting held on January 18 over her continuation as the director of the institute.

He said they resigned from different administrative posts protesting insult of the Dr Afroza and three to four other reasons.

University sources said acting head of the Development Studies Discipline Prof Dr Mostafa Sarwar questioned the validity of Dr Afroza’s continuation as the acting director of the institute whereas a senior professor joined the institute two months ago.

He said as per the rules, the senior profession should be made director of the Fine Arts Institute and Dr Afroza had no rights to attend the academic council meeting as acting director.

Following the incident, Dr Afroza rendered her resignation letter to the vice-chancellor on Wednesday.

Contacted, KU Vice-chancellor Prof Dr M Fayekuzzaman said he heard about the resignation of several teachers and was trying to resolve the problem.

Registrar Dr Amir Hossain, however, said he is yet to get the resignation letters.
