The two factions of BCL belong to metropolitan Awami League president ABM Mohiuddin
Three activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) of Chittagong University (CU) unit have been bullet-hit when two factions of BCL locked into a gunfight at Shah Jalal Hall early Sunday over establishing supremacy on the campus.
With the incident the same BCL factions had locked into the gunfight for the third time on the campus in the last 25 days.
The injured BCL men are Shuvo Barua, 22, of Pali department, Md Akib Rasel, 23, of Sociology department and Farhad Hossain of Islamic Studies, said CU Medical sources.
The injured are the activists of shuttle train based BCL faction Varsity Express (VX), said campus sources.
Of the injured, Rashel and Shuvo were admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH), said Nayek Abul Bashar, CMCH police outpost.
Witnesses said the activists of VX group led by former office secretary Jalal Ahmed drove out the supporters of BCL former joint secretary Sumon Mamun group from the Shah Jalal Hall to establish supremacy that triggered a gunfight between the two groups at around 1:30am, leaving the three BCL men bullet-hit.
Both the groups had exchanged at least 15 rounds of gunshots during the melee, said witness.
Panic gripped the residential students and the residents of the campus during the half an hour gunfight, said campus sources.
Being informed, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control, said Md Salah Uddin, Inspector (investigation) of Hathazari police station.
They heard few sounds of blast, but, they did not find any sign of gunfight, said Sala Uddin.
He said additional police were deployed on the campus to ward off further clash.
Contacted, BCL varsity unit former vice president Sabbir Ahmed Chowdhury also a leader of VX group said Sumon Mamun and his fellows carried out the attack in collaboration with Islami Chhatra Shibir on their activists to avenge previous enmity.
Brushing the allegation Sumon Mamun said the gunfight took place due to VX’s internal feud.
He said VX had tried to divert it in different channels.
It is mentionable that both the VX group and Sumon Mamun group belong to metropolitan Awami League (AL) president ABM Mohiuddin.
