Bishawjit hacked to death by Chatra League strudents in Jagannath University

Sharifuzzaman Nomani

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sharifuzzaman Nomani (d. 13 March 2009) was a member activist of Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir and secretary of Rajshahi University unit of the organisation. He was killed as a result of an attack by Bangladesh Chatra League (BCL) activists during clashes between rival student factions at the university premises.

Life

Sharifuzzaman Nomani was born in the village of Andhariapara, Katakhali, Fulbaria, Mymensingh. His father was Mohammad Habibullah Master and mother Rezia Khatun. He completed his primary education in Nabinagar B.H Dakhil Madrassah and Chonkanda Dakhil Madrassah. After completing his Alim examination from Katlasen Kaderiya Alia Madrassah, he enrolled as a student of Islamic studies in Rajshahi University. He completed his honours from the university and at the time of his death was a second semester student of masters at the university.

Death

On March 13, 2009, Nomani was fatally attacked at Sher-e-Bangla Hall of Rajshahi University by Bangladesh Chatra League cadres with sharp weapons and hockey sticks during clashes between rival student organizations Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir and Bangladesh Chatra League in the aftermath of dispute over holding organizational rallies on the campus. The Shibir rally was in commemoration of another incident in March 11, 1982, where Shibir openly organized a fresher’s reception program, whereby rival student organization barred the function, triggering a bloody clash, leaving 4 Shibir activists and a leader of Chatra League killed. His attackers chopped off his fingers and cleaved his head using sharp weapons, leaving him critically injured. Doctors declared him dead upon arrival to Rajshahi Medical College.

Reaction

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir in separate statements blamed the Chhatra League and the police for the death of Nomani, demanding arrest and punishment of his killers, while student organisations Chhatra League, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal Chhatra League, Chhatra Front and Chhatra Union in separate statements blamed Chhatra Shibir for the clashes, demanding a ban on the politics of Shibir on educational campuses.

Many educational institutions were closed for a long time in the aftermath of the incident.

Case and investigation

The Rajshahi University unit of Shibir accused 27 leaders and activists of Chhatra League’s RU unit, including its president and a local Awami League leader, in a case involving the death of Nomani. In a case lodged a day after the attack, local Awami League leader Anwar Hossain Anar, the RU unit Chhatra League president Ibrahim Hossain Moon, law affairs secretary Arifuzzaman Roni, culture affairs secretary Awal Kabir Joy and 24 Chhatra League activists were accused of killing Nomani.

Three more cases accusing a total of 248 BCL men were filed by Shibir activists with Rajshahi Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court, which asked the police station concerned to take necessary steps.

Though the syndicate committee recommended action against those involved as per the findings of an investigation, the university administration is yet to act.[7] Investigation officers of the investigation case are reported to have been dismissed, while the defendants were reported to have been exonerated since the plaintiff could not attend the court due to fear of being attacked or arrested.

Chhatra League behind Yaba deal in DU

Submitted by saifkh on Tue, 09/12/2014 – 12:33pm

The police have investigated and found Chhatra League leaders’ involvement in yaba trading on the Dhaka University campus, after the police – with help of the DU authorities – arrested seven people yesterday near the university’s Mohsin Hall and seized 1,250 yaba pills from their possession.

“Acting on a tip-off, we arrested them near the Mohsin Hall when they were returning from the hall after buying yaba at around 1:45am,” said Shahbagh police station Officer-in-Charge Sirajul Islam. Two CNG-run auto-rickshaws and a motorcycle – which were used by the arrestees – were also seized at the time, he added.

A case has been filed under the Narcotics Control Act 2013 with the police station in this connection, Sirajul added.

The arrestees are Subroto Kumar Bhowmik, Sanjoy Biwswas Sujon, Md Bachchu, Shahidul Islam, Kabul Kha, Akbar and Kazi Shahidul Islam. None of them are students of the university.

The OC said the detained men confessed to purchasing the yaba pills from Wasim, Mehedi, Maksud, Titu and Suman – all residential students of the hall who live in rooms 311, 337 and 338.

The names mentioned by the arrestees include Chhatra League’s Mohsin Hall unit president Maksud Rana Mithu – who resides in room 337, as well as Chhatra League’s DU unit organising secretary Maksudur Rahman – who resides in room 338.

Although the arrestees mentioned Mithu’s name immediately after they were arrested, they later reportedly omitted the name during police interrogation, sources said.

Seeking anonymity, a Chhatra League leader of the hall unit admitted to the reporters that Mithu had been running yaba business in the hall for the past year, using room 311 to sell the drugs to customers. The drug was brought from Teknaf to be sold to different yaba distributors in the city, he added.

However, Mithu and Maksud both denied allegations of running the drug racket in the hall, terming the claims as a conspiracy against them.

Yesterday’s arrests were made on a tip-off, following which Shahbagh police station SI Sohel Rana stationed a team of law enforcers in front of the Basunia gate near the hall in the wee hours. The team stopped and searched two auto-rickshaws and a motorbike coming out of the hall gate to find the yaba pills with the passengers.

Mohsin Hall Provost Prof Ali Akkass, on the other hand, confirmed the involvement of DU students and Chhatra League activists in the incident. “Surely the students were involved with it; otherwise how could outsiders come to the hall corridors for this business?

“A formal letter will be sent to the students of those particular rooms and appropriate action will be taken against them,” the provost added.

Amzad Ali, acting proctor of the university, also assured of taking steps against those involved.

When asked about the possible involvement of Chhatra League men, the student wing’s DU unit General Secretary Omar Sharif claimed that Chhatra League activists could not be involved in the yaba trade. He, however, said action would be taken against any “misguided” activist.

Chhatra League’s attack on Kurigram Government College’s teacher protested

Submitted by Priyo News on Fri, 05/12/2014 – 2:11pm

Students and teachers of Kurigram Government College staged demonstrations at different points of the city yesterday protesting the attack on International Relations teacher Mizanur Rahman.

On Wednesday around 12:30pm, a fraction of Chhatra League Kurigram unit led by Mominur Rahman Mumin allegedly forced the teachers of the college to join their “Clean Campus, Safe Campus” campaign.

When Mizanur Rahman denied to fill up a form required to join the campaign, 4/5 Chhatra League men assaulted him physically. He was sent to the Kurigram Sadar Hospital.

Following the incident, the teachers of the college submitted a memorandum to the District Administrator and the Police Super on the same day.

Kurigram Government College Vice-Principal Tofael Hossain said although 48 hours had passed into the incident, police was yet to arrest Ramjan Ali who was behind the act. Ramjan Ali is the son of Foyez Uddin, resident of Polashbari Pashchimpara area of the city.

Demanding immediate arrest of the attackers, the students and teachers of the college yesterday formed human chains in front of the Kurigram Press Club and Kurigram Central Shaheed Minar. A rally brought out by the general students of the college blocked a road at the college intersection for an hour in the morning.

The protestors claimed that the alleged attackers were deprived a position at the newly formed central committee of Chhatra League Kurigram unit.

Assistant Professor Abu Zobaer Al-Mukul, International Relations teacher Jibon, History teacher Abdul Matin and Bulbul Ahmed, among others, spoke at the human chains.

They warned of waging continuous movements if police did not arrest the attackers by Friday.

When contacted, Mominur Rahman, former general secretary of Chhatra League Kurigram unit and leader of the Chhatra League activists who claim to have been deprived a post at the newly formed committee, denied the allegations.

He said: “A cleanliness drive called by the central committee was going on inside the campus on Wednesday. The deprived Chhatra League men had no connection with the attacks carried on the teachers inside the college premises.”

Kurigram Sadar police station Officer-in-Charge Abdul Baten Miya said three had been arrested in this connection. Police was continuing drive to arrest the main accused.

Thirteen Chhatra League members sued

Submitted by Tasmee on Wed, 26/11/2014 – 11:35am

Thirteen Jahangirnagar University unit Bangladesh Chhatra League members have been sued over an attack on four members of a rival faction of the organisation on Sunday.

The case was filed with the Ashulia police station Sunday at midnight by Faizul Kabir, father of attack victim Md Adel Al Noman, according to acting officer-in-charge Badrul Alam.

On Sunday, followers of Moulana Bhashani Hall unit BCL president Faisal Ahmed Shakil attacked Md Adel Al Noman, Kishor Das, Md Ekhtekhairuzzaman Sanjay and Shanto Kumar Nath, all followers of hall unit former BCL general secretary Aninda Baroi in retaliation for a clash on August 20.

Noman was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Renaissance Hospital in Dhaka with severe injuries, while the other injured men were admitted to Enam Medical College and Hospital in Savar, sources said.

Previously, on August 20, Aninda Baroi’s faction attacked Faisal Ahmed Shakil’s group bidding to establish dominance over the dormitory.

That clash left 10 BCL leaders and activists belonging to Shakil’s side severely injured. The BCL central committee immediately disbanded the Moulana Bhashani Hall committee because of the incident, sources said.

Noman’s father, Faizur Rahman, filed a case against six leaders and seven activists of the JU unit Chhatra League. All are residential students of Moulana Bhashani Hall, sources said.

The sued leaders are JU unit organising secretaries, Humayun Kabir and Murshidur Rahman Akand; assistant secretary, Mehedi Hasan; secretary of mass-education, Sohel Rana; deputy secretary of mass-education, Md Didar Hossain; and deputy secretary of human resource affairs, SM Firozur Rahman.

The case was filed against expelled geography and environment department student, Ariful Islam, and law department student, Mustakim Islam.

The other sued BCL activists are public health department third-year students, Tareq, Choyon and Zahir; and second-year students, Sohel and Jakir, sources said.

“I was in Dhaka with central Chhatra League leaders and know nothing about Sunday’s attack,” JU unit BCL organising secretary and Moulana Bhashani Hall resident, Murshidur Rahman Akand, told the Dhaka Tribune.

“A case has been filed against me in order to harass me although I was not connected to the incident,” Murshidur claimed.

JU proctor, Dr Tapan Kumar Saha, said the authorities had issued show-cause letters to six BCL leaders and activists; they have been given three days to respond.

“Necessary steps will be taken against the attackers after the investigation takes place and once we receive responses to the show-cause letters,” the proctor said.

We own DU campus: Chhatra League

Submitted by Priyo News on Tue, 11/11/2014 – 5:48pm

In a shameless act of hooliganism on the Dhaka University campus, Chhatra League activists yesterday foiled a peaceful rally at the Shaheed Minar organised to protest last week’s ruthless attack on three people.

These activists of the ruling party’s student front, four of whom have already been expelled in connection with the attack, were mostly from the Shahidullah Hall dormitory of the university.

Even the university’s acting proctor and riot police failed to tame these out-of-control hooligans, most of whom are students of the top university of the country.

The Chhatra League men yesterday did all kinds of ugly things to intimidate and scare away the peaceful protesters, comprising some of the most respected cultural and political figures, university teachers and journalists of the country, who went there to express their solidarity with the victims of that brutal attack.

There were several women among the protesters, whom they attacked with such obscene and filthy words that are hard to express in words.

Out of respect, people leave their shoes behind before stepping on to the compound of the Central Shaheed Minar, built in memory of the brave sons of the soil who sacrificed their lives.

In the struggle for earning the right to speak in Bangla in 1952.

But, the rowdy Chhatra League men went to the extent of taking out shoes in their hands standing right at the base of the monument to frighten the protesters.

Imtiaz Alam Beg, one of the victims of last week’s attack, is the son of noted photojournalist Manzoor Alam Beg, winner of the prestigious Ekushey Padak, awarded to people who have extraordinary contributions to the country’s literature and culture, in memory of the historic Language Movement.

The other two victims are Manzoor’s granddaughters Saba Ahmed, a former student of the Institute of Business Administration (IBA) of DU, and Rubaiya Ahmed.

On November 5, they were hanging out in front of the pond near the Shahidullah Hall when a group of Chhatra League activists attacked them brutally, charging the uncle and his nieces of doing “unsocial things” on the campus.

Soon after, media reported extensively on the incident and the university authorities eventually identified four Chhatra League activists from the dorm who had carried out the attack, and temporarily expelled them. All those four students are currently on the run.

Showing utter disrespect to the university authorities’ decision, the Chhatra League activists yesterday claimed that the protesters had been lying about the November 5 incident. They termed it a propaganda against the “general students” of the university and blamed Saba and Rubaiya of tarnishing their image in the social media.

Despite all these, it did not occur to them that what they had been doing were nothing short of crime. When the university’s acting proctor tried to calm them down and prevent them from attacking the protesters, they shouted at him asking: “Why would they call us criminals?”

Noted lawyer Dr Kamal Hossain, who joined the protest, said: “Who are these people? I doubt they are university students. If they were, they could not have done what they are doing. These Chhatra League activists say the Dhaka University preserves the pride of our Liberation War, Language Movement and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. They cannot pollute the environment of the university.”

He also said: “If they were real students, they could not have lied standing on the Shaheed Minar. Did they think Shaheed Minar was their property? I will ask the vice-chancellor to verify their identities…If Bangabandhu was alive and here, he would have kicked these hooligans out of here. They do not bear the pride of this institution.”

Citing 10 years of his teaching experience at the university, he said: “Students of this university did their best to build the country. I have seen many brilliant and honest students. But I have never thought that any student from here can try to justify a false story.”

When contacted, DU unit Chhatra League President Mehedi claimed that no Chhatra League activists went to the Shaheed Minar.

“They are general students. We have no right to drive them away from the spot. I have heard that they [the protesters] called DU students criminals. So, they protested against that. That is all,” he said.

Turn of events Civil rights group Brotee obtained written permission from the university authorities for holding the rally, in which Imtiaz, his family and a number of prominent ex-students of the university took part. Under the banner “Save Dhaka University from criminals,” they demanded punishment for the attackers.

Around 2pm, several hundred known Chhatra League faces came to the Shaheed Minar compound and formed a human chain at the base of the Language Movement monument. They were holding a banner that read: “Protect Dhaka university from propaganda of Saba and Rubaiya.”

Interestingly, they did not chant a single slogan or did anything until the protesters arrived around 3:20pm. By then, people from various walks of life had started gathering at the venue to join the protest.

When the protesters tried to get on to the main part of the Shaheed Minar compound, the Chhatra League men stopped them and asked them to leave.

The protesters had no other option but to leave the compound and take position on the pavement opposite the monument.

The Chhatra League activists then started chanting slogans against Imtiaz, Saba and Rubaiya. They termed Brotee chief Sharmin Murshed, Dr Kamal Hossain, renowned dancer Lubna Mariam, Prof CR Abrar, journalist Zafar Sobhan, DU Professor Dr Chowdhury Rafiqul Abrar and DU Alumni Association president Rokibuddin Ahmed traitors and agents of Beg’s family.

Two assistant proctors of DU arrived at the scene soon and prevented any untoward incident from happening. The protesters then moved to the steps under the trees.

When DU acting proctor Amzad Ali arrived at the scene and tried to calm the students they demanded removal of the citizen group’s banner. For about one and a half hours, the proctor and his assistants tried to quell the Chhatra League men but in vain.

At one point, the proctor contacted the Chhatra League DU unit President Mehedi Hasan Mollah and President of Shahidullah Hall unit Aminul Islam over phone.

Helpless Amzad was heard telling them over phone: “Come to the Shaheed Minar. Take back your people. They are creating trouble. They are ruining the university’s prestige.” Apparently, none of the Chhatra League leaders responded to his distress call.

By that time, the Chhatra League men made several attempts to attack the protesters, but were pushed back by the university authorities and police. At one point, riot police was called in to ensure the protesters’ safety, but the Chhatra League men blocked the law enforcers as well.

The protesters, among whom were popular folk rock artistes Anusheh, Shayan and Buno, started singing folk and patriotic songs.

In reply, the Chhatra League men shouted, addressing the female protesters, saying: “Stop singing Bangla songs wearing T-shirts. Do not come here wearing sleeveless dresses. Do not sing such songs wearing western attires.”

Soon after they also started singing the national anthem and other patriotic songs.

Around 5pm, Brotee chief Sharmin concluded the protest rally calling upon everyone to create such an atmosphere on the Dhaka University campus where there would be no criminal activity or women would not be harassed.

“I feel ashamed as a teacher of this university. I hope rule of law will prevail,” said Prof Abrar.

He also hoped that one day the young Chhatra League activists would realise what they had done was wrong.

“We are against the criminals, not the students. You should also join us,” he said while addressing the protest rally.

The Dhaka Tribune reporters talked to several students and asked them why they had occupied a spot that had been allotted to another organisation by the authorities.

Moin, who refused to disclose his full identity, said: “We did not take permission to hold the rally here. We are students of this university. We do not need any permission.”

Sharmin Murshed, one of the organisers, said: “Dhaka University is close to our hearts. We will not let anyone snatch it. Please protest every incident of repression against women on the campus.”

One of the victims Rubaiya said: “I cannot believe that the place where we used to roam around all day has become unsafe for us because of some rogues. I think, every ex-student should come forward to help and clean the mess off the campus.”

Singer Anusheh said: “One day, these students will understand they had done a wrong thing and will say sorry.”

BCL sues railway staff

Submitted by Fabzee on Wed, 03/09/2014 – 12:47pm

Bangladesh Chhatra League sued 17 law enforcers, including the officer-in-charge (OC) of Railway Police’s outpost at Chittagong railway station and its station master, on charge of beating Chhatra League men and not providing them with train tickets.

Ashraf Uddin, assistant office secretary of the Chittagong city unit of Chhatra League, filed the case yesterday before the court of Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Moshiur Rahman, against Yasin Faruk, the OC, his bodyguard Emran, and Sub-Inspector Wahid at the Railway Police outpost, and Station Master Jafar Ahmed, Booking Clerk Mohsin Ali, and Railway Security Force personnel Mohammad Rasel, Saiful Islam, Md Shamusddin, Imrul Khan, Md Kuddus, Mohammad Ullah, Habildar Rabiul Haque, Delwar Hossain, Habibur Rahman, Munir Hossain, Habibur Rahman Habib and Mohammad Sabbir.

The case was filed under Sections 326, 324, 307 and 34 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

Taking the complaint into cognizance, the court ordered AKM Mohiuddin, OC of Kotwali police station, to file the complaint as First Information Report, said Fakhruddin Chowdhury, public prosecutor of the court.

Sources said Chhatra League applied for tickets for 380 seats at the Dhaka-bound Subarna Express to attend attend the party’s central meeting on Sunday.

But when they went to the railway station to collect the tickets on August 27, the railway officials said they were unable to give so many tickets at once.

This caused an altercation between the Chhatra League men and the railway officials, and at one point the Railway Police and Railway Security Force members allegedly beat and injured four Chhatra League activists.

Following the clash, the Chhatra League activists started a demonstration at the railway station and vandalised properties on the station premises.

Amid the protests, Bangladesh Railway (East Zone) authorities suspended the station master, booking clerk, and three security force members on the day of the incident. The Railway Police OC was forced to go on leave.

They also formed a five-member probe body headed by Divisional Traffic Officer Firoz Iftekhar to look into the matter, sources said.

Chhatra League activists arrested for abduction

Submitted by Fabzee on Sat, 10/05/2014 – 12:41pm

Police yesterday arrested seven Dhaka University students for their alleged involvement in the abduction of a businessman from the capital’s Fakirapul.

The arrestees are Anupam Chandra, Himel, Tanvirul Islam, Mamun, Bappy, Srijann Ghosh and Arfan Patwary. All of them were taken to Ramna police station. All of them are involved with Bangladesh Chhatra League.

Police also rescued businessman Farhad Islam, 26, from Dhaka University’s Jagannath dorm a day after his abduction.

Shahbagh police station Sub-Inspector Shimul Kumar Mohonto told the Dhaka Tribune that a case had been filed against the arrestees.

Police sources said Chhatra League’s Central Deputy Sports Secretary Sajib Ghosh and his followers abducted the trader on Thursday night around 9pm, confined him in the dorm and then demanded Tk5 lakh from his family.

Police later arrested Arfan when he was taking the ransom money from Farhad’s family members in Central Shaheed Minar area. Based on his information, police conducted a drive in the university’s Jagannath dorm and arrested the Chhatra League activists around 2:30pm.

Jagannath Hall Provost Ashawim Kumar told the Dhaka Tribune he was not aware of any such incident.

Dhaka University acting proctor Amzad Ali said punitive measures would be taken against the accused.

Chhatra League DU unit President Mehedi Hasan Mollah said the arrested activists would be expelled from the organisation if they were found guilty.

Murder at RU: Killed by fellow BCL men?

Submitted by Shahriar.Asif on Sun, 06/04/2014 – 11:42am

Soon after the shooting of Rajshahi University BCL leader Rustam in his dormitory room on Friday, two fellow activists were seen by his side with one of them holding a pistol, witnesses say.

Rustam Ali Akanda, 22, Suhrawardi Hall unit joint secretary of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), was declared dead at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital around 2:00pm that day.

A bullet pierced Rustam’s right lower chest and went out through the left shoulder damaging the heart, liver and lungs; it caused internal bleeding leading to his death, doctors said.

The ill-fated youth was buried at his home village in Gaibandha around 11:00am yesterday.

The Daily Star has interviewed two witnesses who are Rustam’s neighbours at the dorm. Hearing a single gunshot, they had rushed towards his room.

Through the window, one witness said, he saw Rustam lying in a pool of blood, and standing close to him were Abdullah Al Galib, publicity secretary of RU BCL, and Selim Reza, a BCL activist and second-year student.

A classmate of Rustam, a fourth-year student of political science, was also in the room.

Selim was holding a pistol while Galib was scolding him. “What have you done? You should have watched out.”

According to the witness, the gunshot was heard around 1:15pm and Rustam was taken out of the room around 1:30pm for hospital.

Another witness said he saw the pistol in Galib’s hand while Selim was trying to stop the bleeding. “I was so frightened… I passed out returning to my room.”

The classmate, who was present in the room, told The Daily Star he was studying with Rustam before the two BCL men came. Selim shot Rustam following an altercation over leadership of the hall unit BCL.

While talking to these correspondents, he was crying and trembling in fear. “Don’t ask me anything … they will kill me too”.

An RU BCL leader said the pistol belonged to Rustam. “It was given to him several days ago as he was threatened by some Shibir men.”

On the statements of the witnesses, Proloy Chichim, deputy commissioner of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police, said they got a similar version.

No case was filed till the filing of this report last night and none was arrested.

According to campus sources, Rustam was vying for president post of the hall unit BCL in the April 10 council while Selim Hossain, a third-year law student was his contender. Selim Reza was loyal to Hossain.
But RU BCL President Mizanur Rahman Rana said, “Both are my followers.
Rivalry between Rustam and Selim is out of question.”
He claimed about 70 percent resident students of Suhrawardi Hall somehow belong to Shibir. “It is possible that they were behind it.”
Galib, Selim or Hossain could not be contacted.

Meanwhile, the RU authorities were forced to suspend all classes and examinations as the pro-Awami League student body began an indefinite strike on the campus demanding immediate arrest of “Shibir men involved in the killing”.

‘RETURNED A CORPSE’

Yesterday, Rustom was buried at his family graveyard in his village Chalk Narayan of Sadullapur upazila after a funeral attended by thousands including leaders and activists of Awami League and its front organisations.

Wailing nonstop, Rustom’s father Shahjahan Ali Akanda said, “I had sent my son to university and hoped he would be highly educated. But he returned a corpse.”

The mother, Rowshan Ara Begum, who was fainting frequently, demanded capital punishment of the culprits involved in her son’s killing.

Seeking arrest and punishment of Rustom’s killer, Sadullapur BCL activists and locals brought out a procession yesterday.

‘Moncho rally not allowed fearing clash’

Submitted by Shahriar.Asif on Sat, 05/04/2014 – 4:16pm

There had been difference in opinion in the activists of Gonojagoron Moncho, State Minister for Home Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal has said.

In a bid to avoid violence, police did not let them hold rally at Shahbagh, the junior minister said.

However, he said police will take action against the attackers after investigating into the incident.

Police have already arrested the accused of the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leader killing at Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) campus, the minister informed.

On Friday afternoon, some around 20 activists of Gonojagoron Moncho were injured in a police action as it and another group named Muktijuddha Sangsad Sontan Command tried to hold rallies at the capital’s Shahbagh.

Police resorted to charging batons and detained Moncho men, including Badhon, Farid, Sohag, Dhiman, Tito and Joy, and activists of the Muktijuddha Sangsad Sontan Command, including its President Mehedi Hasan Prince.

Meanwhile, both Gonojagoron Moncho and Muktijoddha Sangsad Sontan Command filed separate cases with Shahbagh police station early yesterday against each other for the attack on Thursday night.

Chhatra League vs. Chhatra League

Shamsur Rahman and Asifur Rahman | Update: 12:33, Nov 22, 2014

Over the past six years, 30 leaders and activists of Chhatra League have died in clashes within the organisation. However, the president of Bangladesh Chhatra League, a ‘brother concern’ of Awami League, claimed that the number will be not more than 8-10. He said over 50 of their leaders and activists had been killed in attacks by the BNP-Jamaat-Shibir clique.

Chhatra League was involved in at least 432 clashes within itself or with other organisations over the past six years. These clashes resulted in the death of at least 54. This included 39 of their own organisation. The remaining 15 included two children, general people and activists of rival organisations. Over 1500 people were injured in these fights. In these six years, 11 Chhatra League leaders and activists were killed by other student organisations.

These figures were found from reports of Prothom Alo of 1 January 2009 till yesterday, that is, 21 November 2014.

Other than that, Chhatra League has all along come to the limelight due to abductions, muggings, toll collection, tender manipulations, admission trade, assaulting teachers, attacking the media and the police and so on.

Most recently, Sumon Das, Chhatra League activist and third year BBA student of the International University was killed in clashes at Sylhet’s Shahjalal University of Science and Technology between two factions of Chhatra League. This is the fourth time such clashes took place in the university over the past one year.

Over 50 educational institutions had to close down indefinitely over the past six years due to conflict and clashes of Chhatra League. Classes and exams were held up in many institutions. At least five universities had to close down several times each. Chittagong University of Science and Technology and Comilla University had to close down indefinitely three times each. The general students are suffering due to these repeated closures. The education system is being harmed.

In these six years, 163 persons have been expelled from various educational institutions due to negative activities of Chhatra League. However, these expelled students simply come back to the campus and even attend the exams.

At a recent meeting with Sajeeb Wazed Joy, the prime ministers IT advisor, Chhatra League general secretary Siddiqui Najmul Alam said that after the organisation’s present committee was installed, 622 persons have been expelled from Chhatra League for anti-organisational activities. But the Chhatra League leaders themselves could not say how many of these expulsions actually came into effect. These expelled leaders and activists still attend the organisation’s programmes.

When questioned in this regard during a press conference at Dhaka University’s Madhur Canteen yesterday, Friday, Chhatra League president HM Badiuzzaman said, “We cannot take the law into our own hands. We expel them from the party. After that if the police or the administration doesn’t take action against them, you can ask them about that.”

Party conflict: On 31 March this year, Sayad Ibne Mumtaz, organising secretary of Bangladesh Agricultural University Chhatra League unit, was killed. He was a final year student of the pisciculture department.

Sayad was killed by Chhatra League leaders and activists over differences regarding classes and exams and past enmity. But the university administration did not mention anyone’s name in the case. However, it expelled six Chhatra League leaders for various terms.

The police submitted a charge sheet to the Mymensingh court against 14 leaders and activists of Chhatra League in this regard. Among them, Sujoy Kumar Kundu, Rukunuzzman and Antar Chowdhury were arrested, but the first two were also released on bail. And the others, according to the police, are ‘absconding’.

On 4 April this year, Rustam Ali Akhand, acting general secretary of Rajshahi University’s Shaheed Suhrawardy Hall, was shot dead in his room. This fourth year political science student was a candidate for the post of hall president at the next council. It is alleged that he was killed over rivalry centred on this post. Seven years have passed since this killing, but the police are yet to identify or arrest anyone in this connection.

Also, on 15 August 2010, Chattra League leader Nasirullah Nasim was thrown off the third storey roof of Shah Makhdoom Hall of the same university and killed due to Chhatra League’s inner fracas.

On 14 July this year, inner conflict led to Nayeemul Islam, student of Jessore University of Science and Technology, was hacked to death. The authorities expelled the university Chhatra League president and general secretary for involvement in the murder. The main culprit among the 12 accused in this case, university Chhatra League president Subrata Biswas, was caught and handed over to the police by his classmates. The other accused persons are regularly taking part in processions and rallies, but the police are not arresting them.

Chittagong district Lohagara upazila Chhatra League leader Touqir Islam was thrown off a train and killed on 31 August on the way back from a public meeting in Dhaka. He had got involved in an argument over where to sit, when a few activists of Satkania Chhatra League threw him off the train. He was recovered from Nimtali in Tongi and taken to Dhaka Medical College where he died. No case has even been filed in this regard.

When Awami League came to power in 2009, the first killing through Chhatra League’s in-fights took place on 30 March that year. Abul Kalam Asad, general secretary of one faction of Dhaka Medical College Chhatra League, was killed in the college. The college was closed indefinitely, but the killing remains unpunished.

On 12 July 2010m activists of a faction of Chhatra League hacked to death Udayendu Sinha, a mathematics student of Sylhet MC College. On 19 July the same year Chhatra League leader Ali Reza was stabbed to death in a power struggle at Goran in the capital city. On 9 January 2011 Zubair Ahmed, student of the English department and Chhatra League activist at Jahangirnagar University, was killed in an attack by activists of the same organisation. On 16 July 2012 Chhatra League leader Abdullah Al Hasan was shot and killed in clashes between two factions of Chhatra League at Rajshahi University.

Zubair’s brother Abdullah Al Mamun, a private university teacher, yesterday expressed his doubts over ever receiving justice regarding his brother’s murder. He said that their mother had fallen ill even since Zubair’s death. He expressed his anger at the four accused persons not being caught after they fled from the court.

Chhatra League president HM Badiuzzaman claims that not more than 8-10 have died in internal clashes over the past five years. He said that over 50 Chhatra League leaders and activists were killed in BNP-Jamaat-Shibir clashes. He told Prothom Alo yesterday that organisational action had been taken against all the incidents of intra-organisation clashes, and cases had been filed in a few incidents.

Outsiders not spared: Innocent people and students have also been killed in these clashes within Chhatra League. Even children have not been spared. Eight-year-old Arman Hossain and 25-year-old Saju Palit were killed when Chhatra League and Jubo League groups clashed on 24 June 2013 over submitting bids for a railway tender in Chittagong. Another child, Rabbi, was killed on 19 January when two groups of Chhatra League clashed at Bangladesh Agriculture University.

Jagannath Chhatra League leaders and activists openly hacked tailor shop employee Biswajit Das to death on 9 December 2012. Eight persons were sentenced to death and 13 to life imprisonment in this case. However, two of those sentenced to death and 11 to life imprisonment are ‘absconding’. This is the only killing that has seen some degree of justice.

Abu Bakr, third year student of Islamic history and culture at Dhaka University, was killed in 2010 during clashes between two sides of Chhatra League at the university’s F Rahman Hall.

Chhatra Dal leader killed: Tauhid Islam (26), Chhatra Dal leader of Sylhet Osmany Medical College, was killed on 4 June in an attack by Chhatra League on Abu Sina hall. Chhatra League leaders and activists killed this fourth year student id a drive to establish their control on campus.

The next day a murder case was filed against 10 persons including the medical college Chhatra League president Soumen De, general secretary Saiful Hai, organising secretary Mushfiquzzaman Akhand as well as ten more unidentified persons. The 10 named in the case were expelled from the college on 7 June.

Soumen De was arrested and issued a confessional statement on 8 June at the Sylhet chief metropolitan magistrate’s court. He admitted his guilt and provided information concerning the others involved in the murder. After about a month in jail, Soumen was released on bail and is now working at the college as an intern doctor.

Morshed Ahmed Chowdhury, principal of Osmany Medical College, yesterday told Prothom Alo, “He has been expelled from the college. I have no idea about him being an intern.”

Teachers, police, journalists, no one spared: Teachers, police and journalists have not been spared from Chhatra League’s violence. In six years, at least 171 police and journalists have been injured by Chhatra League in 62 incidents. And in 33 incidents 74 teachers were harassed by Chhatra League leaders and activists. On 12 February 2013, a section of Chhatra League beat up Shankar Chandra Dutta, a newly appointed teacher of Barisal Brojo Mohan College, and threw him out of the college. The consequences of any Chhatra League leader being detained or arrested are not very pleasant either. The activists block the roads and damage vehicles. The police officer responsible for the arrest comes under attack.

Sporadic fights: A review of news reports over the past six years reveals Chhatra League’s involvement in abductions, rape, mugging, extortion, tender bid control, admission trade, harassing girl students, forcefully occupying student hall rooms, obstructing contractual work, and other unscrupulous activities. Over a hundred Chhatra League leaders and workers have been detained or arrested in over 150 criminal incidents.

Chhatra League groups flare up and clash over the most minor issues. An analysis of the last six months’ news reports in Prothom Alo shows that Chhatra League has been involved in clashes within itself over 250 times. It has clashed with other organisations over 150 times. They have been involved in evicting students from the halls, torturing them and attacking innocent people.

Abduction: Chhatra League came into the news at the outset of this year due to abductions. At least six incidents of abduction occurred in the various halls of Dhaka University alone. On 13 February Chhatra League activist Ariful Rahman abducted pisciculture student Tariqul Islam from Surjya Sen Hall and held him hostage. On 12 February detective branch (DB) of police nabbed Sir AF Rahman Hall Chhatra League organising secretary Mohammed Hafiz and joint general secretary Ferdous Rifat, but no action was taken against them.

On 28 February, Mahbubul Alam, Haji Muhammed Mohsin Hall Chhatra League organising secretary, abducted a shopkeeper of Priyangan Shopping Centre. Sohel Rana, publicity secretary of Dhaka College Chhatra League’s dissolved committee, abducted AB Mainul Islam, a first year student of Farsi, from Chankharpool.

Police detained seven Chhatra League leaders and activists for abducting Farhad Islam, a businessman, from Suhrawardy Uddyan on 9 May. They are all out on bail. With the help of Chhatra League activists, the younger brother of former Chhatra League leader Utpal Saha abducted a driver on 18 November and held him hostage at Jagannath Hall, demanding ransom. After being released the next day, the driver filed a case in this regard, but no action has been taken.
