2 to walk gallows for killing Keraniganj schoolboy Nafiz

A tribunal here on Tuesday sentenced two men to death for killing schoolboy Nafiz in Keraniganj in 2012.

 

The convicts were identified as M Ali Hossain, son of Surut Ali, and M Shafique, son of Mohammad Hanif of Puratan Sonakanda village in Keraniganj upazila.

 

The tribunal acquitted another accused, M Khalil, son of Abdul Aziz of Banuartek of the upazila.

 

According to the procession, Nafiz, 6, a play group student of Provati Bidyaniketan Kindergarten School and son of Arab Ali of Puratan Sonakanda village, had gone out to buy chocolates from a grocery nearby his house in the afternoon of February 21, 2012 and did not return home.

 

On the same day (Feb 21), some unidentified people demanded Tk 5 lakh from the family members of Nafiz over phone as a ransom for his release.

 

Local people recovered Nafiz’s body near Mollahbari Mosque of the village on the morning of February 23, two days after he had gone missing.

 

On the same day (Feb 23), the victim’s maternal grandfather Bachchu Mia filed a case against some unidentified people.

 

Investigation Officer (IO) of Keraniganj Police Station Shahadat Hossain submitted the chargesheet against three people.

 

After examining 16 witnesses and documents, Judge ABM Sajedur Rahman of Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-3 handed down the verdict.
