Similar rally Wednesday
Being denied government permission, the BNP-led 18-party alliance moved its today’s (Monday’s) Nayaplatan rally to Wednesday.
BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’s adviser Shamsuzzaman Dudu told a press briefing at the party’s Nayapaltan central office in the morning that the rally will be held on Wednesday at the same venue at 3.00pm.
Today’s rally was scheduled to be held at 2.00pm to press home its demand for restoration of the caretaker government system, registering the opposition’s protest for rejecting BNP chief Khaleda Zia’s 48-hour ultimatum for caretaker government system and May 5 crackdown on Hefajat activists at Shapla Chattar, and pressurising the “failed regime” to quit.
On Thursday night, BNP standing committee member Barrister Moudud Ahmed announced the programme at BNP chairperson’s Gulshan office after a meeting of the party’s policymakers.
Addressing today’s briefing, Dudu said they waited till 11:00am for the government permission to hold the rally, but the government did not allow them to stage it.
He alleged that the government by not allowing them to hold today’s rally has snatched the opposition’s constitutional right for staging demonstrations.
Dudu urged the government to withdraw its restriction on holding rallies and political programmes, and create an atmosphere conducive to dialogue.
