14 killed in road crashes in 5 dists

At least 14 people were killed and 91 others injured in separate road accidents in seven districts on Saturday.

 

The districts are Gaibandha, Madaripur, Gopalganj, Magura, Manikganj, Faridpur and Joypurhat. Of them, deaths in the accidents were reported from the former five districts.

 

In Gaibandha, eight people were killed and 29 others injured in a head-on collision between two buses in Gobindaganj upazila in the afternoon.

 

The identities of the deceased could not be known yet.

 

Police said the Rangpur-bound bus of ‘Hanif Paribahan’ from Bogra collided head-on with the Bogra-bound bus from Nakhaihat in Gobindaganj carrying members of a bridal party at Goalia around 5:15pm, killing three people on the spot and injuring 34 others.

 

The injured were rushed to different hospitals where five of them died.

 

The injured were admitted to Gobindaganj Upazila Health Complex, Rangpur Medical College Hospital and Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in Bogra.

 

In Madaripur, three motorcyclists were killed as a bus crashed into their bike in Rajoir upazila in the afternoon.

 

One of the deceased was identified as Sabbir Hossain of Kazirteck Ferry Ghat area in the upazila.

 

Police and witnesses said the Barisal-bound bus of ‘Surjamukhi Paribahan’ from Faridpur ran into the motorbike of the trio at Kalibari on Dhaka-Barisal highway around 5:30pm while they were going to Tekerhat from the district town.

 

All of the motorcycle riders died on the spot.

 

In Gopalganj, a Bangladesh Navy man was killed and 10 people were injured when a microbus plunged into a roadside ditch on Dhaka-Khulna highway at Gorakhola in Muksudpur upazila at noon.

 

The deceased was identified as Khorshed Alam, 28, a Navy member who hailed from Kasba of Brahmanbaria district.

 

Witnesses said the microbus fell into the ditch breaking the railing of a bridge as its driver lost control over the steering, killing Khorshed on the spot and injuring 10 people.

 

The injured were admitted to Faridpur and Maksudpur hospitals.

 

In Magura, a woman was killed as a truck smashed her head when she put the head outside a bus on Magura-Kamarkhali road at Wapda crossing in Kamarkhali upazila at noon.

 

The deceased was identified as Marjina Khatun, 25, daughter of Shawkat Hossain of Satkhira district.

 

Police said the truck hit the young girl while she was enjoying the nature beauty on her way back home by the bus, leaving her critically injured.

 

She was rushed to Sadar hospital where doctors declared her dead.

 

In Manikganj, a man was killed and 15 others injured in a head-on collision between two buses on Dhaka-Aricha highway at Tepra in the afternoon.

 

The deceased was identified as Yusuf Ali Sardar of Rajbari district.

 

Quoting witnesses, highway police said the accident took place at about 2 pm when a Dhaka-bound ‘Bikash Paribahan’ bus from Paturia Ferry Ghat collided head-on with another bus of ‘Shohagh Paribahan’.

 

The ‘Bikash Paribahan’ bus plunged into a roadside ditch after the collision, leaving Yusuf killed and 15 passengers injured.

 

The injured were rushed to local hospitals.

 

In Faridpur, 25 people were injured when a Faridpur-bound bus from Alfadanga crashed into a roadside tree in Boalmari upazila at noon.

 

The injured were rushed to Faridpur Medical College Hospital.

 

Yet in another accident in Joypurhat, 12 people were injured when a human-hauler overturned at Halir intersection in Akkelpur upazila at about 2 pm.

 

Four of the injured were admitted to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital where their condition was stated to be critical.

 

The victims met the incident while going to Shishu Udyan in the district town.
