12 more killed in lightning

Heavy rain for couple of hours on Friday triggers water-clogging in the capital, causing immense inconvenience to city people. The photo was taken at Nazira Bazaar in old town of Dhaka.

At least 11 more people were killed after getting struck by lightning at places in six districts during the Friday’s rain, coupled with thunder storms and Nor’westers.
On Thursday, a total of 33 people were killed and six others were injured in separate incidents of lightning across the country.
Our Chittagong correspondent reported that 29-year-old Amzad Ali, cousin of former primary and mass education minister Afsarul Ameen, was struck by lightning at Baruni Ghat area under Pahartali police, around 9:00am.
Locals whisked him to Chittagong Medical College and Hospital where the attending physicians declared him dead.
A 16-year-old Gias Uddin, son of Abul Hossain, was also hit by thunderbolt around the same time in the port city’s Patenga area while he was playing cricket. He died on the spot.
Our Joypurhat correspondent said two farm workers were killed by thunderbolts at Joypurhat sadar and Khetlal upazila, respectively, in the morning.
The deceased were identified as Rafiqul Islam, 33, and Manik Mia, 35.
In Dhaka, two youths, Montu Mia and Monir Hossain died on the spot as they came in contact with the atmospheric electricity at Savar and Dhamrai areas in the morning.
In Tangail, two school students named Anisur and Lima were killed by lightning while playing on their yards.
Our Naogaon correspondent said that a teen-aged girl and a middle-aged farmer were hit by thunderbolts at Porsha and Mohadebpur upazila on Friday morning. They were rushed to the nearby hospitals where the
physicians declared them dead.
In Sunamganj, 30-year-old Amir Hossain was killed in the similar natural event while working in haor (lake) on Friday noon.
At least one person was killed and another wounded in lightning strike during a Nor’wester at Sujalpur and Barandipara under Kotwali police in Jessore on Friday evening.
Yar Ali Mollah, 75 died on the spot while his wife Aleya Bebum, 65, was wounded as they went to the field to fetch their cattle amid a Nor’wester.
Nazma Begum, 45, wife of Allauddin was wounded in lightning strike at Barandipara in Jessore town. Both the wounded were rushed to Jessore
Medical College and Hospital.
Bangladesh Meteorological department said on Friday rain and thunder shower to be accompanied by temporary gusty and squally wind is likely to occur at a few places over Dhaka, Rangpur, Rajshahi, Khulna, Barisal, Chittagong and Sylhet divisions on Saturday.
