10 killed in Narsinghdi crash

At least ten people have died after two buses drove into each other at Shibpur in Narsinghdi.

A Dhaka-bound Shohagh Paribahan bus collided head-on with a Monohordi-bound ‘Meghalay Paribahan’ bus at Kararchar on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway around 5pm on Wednesday, police and witnesses said.

Both the buses caught fire after gas cylinders in them exploded.

Traffic was disrupted for two hours on the busy highway leading to huge snarls.

Hundreds of vehicles were stranded at both ends of the road.

Traffic resumed after firefighters put out the flames and removed the two ill-fated public carriers from the road.

Narsinghdi Deputy Commissioner Abu Hena Morshed Zaman initially confirmed bdnews24.com of six people dying on the spot.

The dead bodies along with several injured people were sent to Narsinghdi Sadar Hospital. However, seven bodies were found in the morgue in the evening.

Police identified two of the dead passengers as Sohana Ahmmed, 24, from Kishoreganj’s Kendua village, and Mojnu Mia, 50, of Narsinghdi’s Raipura Upazila.

Five others, including a child, are yet to be identified.

Meanwhile, three of the 13 injured passengers taken to the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital have succumbed to their injuries, DMCH police outpost Inspector Mozammel Haque said.

He said both the victims, aged 65 and 50 years, had the same name, Abdul Hannan.

Another wounded Rezia Begum, 45, died around 9pm, said Inspector Haque.
