10 injured in police firing at Banani Super Market

Businessmen alleged that a Dhaka North City Corporation executive magistrate started the drive around 11am on Thursday without any prior notice.

DMP Gulshan Division Assistant Commissioner Nurul Alam confirmed to bdnews24.com that the police firing had taken place.

“Police opened fire at the magistrate’s order. At least 8/10 have been injured. They are being treated in various local hospitals.”

Market committee’s General Secretary Mahmud Hasan Azad told bdnews24.com that police and city corporation people led by magistrate Mahbubur Rahman started randomly evicting shops.

When shopkeepers asked the magistrate to show the eviction order, he refused and instead asked whether the businessmen had ties with a person named ‘Nipu’.

“An argument broke out between businessmen and the magistrate. At one point, he ordered the police to open fire. 15-20 people were shot when police started to fire randomly.”

Among the seriously injured, seven were taken to United Hospital and two to Kurmitola General Hospital, Azad said .

Magistrate Mahbubur Rahman could not be reached over phone for his comments.
