Turjo murder: HC commutes death sentence of four

jailed

The High Court (HC) on Sunday commuted the death sentence of four convicts of Turjo Ghosh Rony murder case and acquitted another from the charge.

The HC bench of Justice Abdul Hai and Justice Krishna Debnath gave the verdict after hearing the lower court’s death reference and the appeal filed against it by the defendants.

Earlier, convicts Shahadat Hossain Liton alias Khora Liton, his brother Al Mamun, Abu Sayeed, Shamsun Nahar Shauly and Farhad Alam Hira were condemned to death by the lower court in connection with the murder of Turjo.

The HC today commuted the sentences of Khora Liton and Al Mamun to life imprisonment, while the death sentences of Abu Sayeed and Shamsun Nahar Sheuli to seven years’ imprisonment.

The HC also acquitted Farhad Alam Hira of the charge.

The Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 of Dhaka in a verdict on January 23, 2008, sentenced all the five convicts to death for their involvement in Turjo murder. All the convicts were sent to jail.

The convicts kidnapped Turjo Ghosh Rony, son of a jewellery shop owner Jagannath Ghosh, for ransom. Later, Turjo was killed.

According to the case details, Sheuli on October 29, 2006, took away Turjo from his residence at Uttara to her rented residence at Rampura.

Turjo was locked up in Sheul’s house at Uttara, and a ransom of Tk 1 crore was demanded from his family for his release by the kidnappers.

Later, Turjo’s father reached a deal with the kidnappers and put Tk 10 lakh and 10 tolas of gold ornaments at a place at Mirpur.

As Trujo did not return even after the ransom was paid, his father filed a case with the Uttara police station on November 7, 2006.

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) recovered the decomposed corpse of Turjo in two pieces from two different spots in the city on December 11. The law enforcers arrested Abu Syeed in connection with the murder on December 20.

Later, Abu Sayeed confessed to the killing and the others involved in the killing were arrested based on his confessional statements.

After the investigation into the case, DB police submitted a charge sheet against the five accused on March 5, 2007.

The case was then transferred to the Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 of Dhaka. The speedy trial tribunal took depositions from 35 witnesses and handed down the death sentences to all the accused.
