Written by acclaimed playwright Manzur-e-Mawla and directed by theatre personality Ataur Rahman, “Rudra Rabi O Jallianwala Bagh” presents a lesser-discussed side of the Nobel Laureate poet Rabindranath Tagore.
It was a historic incident, where Tagore took a bold stand against the brutality of the British army by rebutting his knighthood in protest against the Jallianwala Bagh massacre in 1919.
An array of historic events that took place during the Gandhi period and other protests rallied against the British Raj across the globe, have also been reflected in the play.
The story then depicted the brutality of the Jallianwala Bagh carnage where hundreds of innocent people were murdered from thousands were seriously injured the gunfire of the British Army led by Brigadier General Reginald Dyer at a gathering at Jallianwala Bagh Public Garden in Amritsar, India, in 1919.
Fifty British Indian Army soldiers began shooting at an unarmed gathering of men, women, and children without warning.
Video clips from three English movies, “Gandhi,” “Bhagat Singh” and “The Legend of Bhagat Singh” were screened with narrations to relate the history.
The protagonist, Rabindranath Tagore is played by Shamim Sagor, the British general by Fakhruzzaman Chowdhury and George Hunter by Aminur Rahman Mukul. All played their roles well. Light designer Nasirul Haque Khokon successfully created the illusions required for the play.
