TIB demands punishment of those attacked minorities

‘Such attacks unpardonable’

Condemning the recent attacks on minorities, Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) on Friday demanded exemplary punishment of the perpetrators through a fair investigation into the incidents.

“Attacks on the minorities and their worship places are against the spirit of Bangladesh’s independence and the War of Liberation. Such attacks are in no way acceptable in a country which is committed to ensuring equal rights… it’s unpardonable,” TIB Executive Director Dr Iftekharuzzaman said in a statement.

He said there had been attacks on minorities in the past in a planned way ahead of national elections under political and powerful people’s shelter. “Similarly, ahead of the next national election, such attacks with the aim of creating fear, unhealthy and destructive politics are in no way acceptable.”

The TIB chief said if the administration, law-enforcing agencies and the political parties do not take immediate steps to stop such attacks, it may appear dangerous.

“We’re very concerned as the attacks are considered as planned and motivated. It’s not the attacks on minorities but also on the spirit of independent Bangladesh…It’s unacceptable and unpardonable.”

The statement mentioned attacks on minorities in Pabna, Lalmonirhat, Khagrachhari and Faridpur districts.

Earlier, the United States and the European Union (EU) voiced concern over the attacks on minorities.

On Thursday, EU Ambassador in Dhaka William Hanna said they are concerned as there have been new attacks on minorities. “We condemn all such attacks.”

On Wednesday, the US Embassy in Dhaka in a statement said, “We’re deeply concerned by recent attacks on Hindus in Pabna and in Lalmonirhat districts. We call on all those involved in these incidents to desist from abusing the rights of minorities, and ask all parties to ensure they’re stopped immediately and the perpetrators are held accountable.”
