News - Sohel Rana on fresh 13-day remand

Two Dhaka courts on Wednesday placed Sohel Rana, the owner of collapsed Rana Plaza, on a fresh 13-day remand in three cases.

The three cases -– one under the Narcotics Control Act, another under the Arms Act and the third one for murder -– were filed against Sohel Rana after his eight-storey building came down crashing on April 24 that left over 1,100 people dead.

Senior Judicial Magistrate Tajul Islam granted a two-day remand in the case filed under the Narcotics Control Act when police produced him before his court with a five-day remand prayer on completion of his 15-day remand.

The same court placed the Rana Plaza owner on six days’ remand in the case filed under the Arms Act when police sought a seven-day remand.

Besides, Senior Judicial Magistrate Taimur Hasan granted a five-day remand in the murder case after police filed a seven-day remand petition.

On April 28, members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested Sohel Rana along with his two associates from Benapole in Jessore, foiling his bid to flee to India.

Later, he was placed on a 15-day remand in two cases.

The death toll from the disastrous Rana Plaza collapse stood at 1,127.

A total of 2,438 people were rescued alive from the rubble of the collapsed Rana Plaza. Of them, 12 died at different hospitals.
