Dhaka, Mar 14 (UNB) – Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Dr Mizanur Rahman on Thursday called upon the chiefs of the two major political parties to sit for a dialogue to resolve the ongoing political crisis and maintain peace in the country.
“You (Hasina and Khaleda) at least sit together for once. No agenda is needed. Sit just for having tea. Let greetings be exchanged between you. You (both ladies) can show the whole nation the path of emancipation,” he said.
The NHRC boss was speaking at a discussion jointly organised by NHRC, Campaign for Sustainable Rural Livelihoods (CSRL) and Oxfam at the National Press Club marking the International Women’s Day 2013.
Mentioning that his Commission is ready to take initiatives for holding the much-desired dialogue, Dr Mizan said, “If they (Hasina and Khaleda) want, we can make arrangements for talks any time.”
The NHRC chief said, “Both the ruling and the opposition parties want dialogue. They also want the trial of war criminals. So, all this could be sorted out if they sit together.”
He also urged both Sheikh Hasina and Khaleda Zia to soften their rigid stances against each other.
Turning to attacks on minorities, Dr Mizan called on the government to stand beside them.
Stating that violence in the politics has taken a new turn, he said women and children are now being used as weapons in the field of politics.
The NHRC chief urged the political parties to refrain from using women and children as weapons to make their narrow political gains.
Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Women and Children Affairs Meher Afroz Chumi, MP, among others, spoke at the programme.
